Anyone Put A Transmission Temp. Gauge In Their Truck?

Just wondering, I know when working the truck some when its been geared down under load for abit i smell something like the trans is getting really hot or something similar. that's near as I can figure because as soon as the trans is relieved of the load and allowed to get abit more airflow it stops. and it slightly concerns me and i'm wondering if anyone has put a gauge in. also how would it need to be hooked up on this truck(06 Sierra)?

you could always get a new gauge cluster that has a Tranny temp already on it. It's plug and play so all you do is plug it in and you're good to go. Plus you get to upgade or swap out your original cluster

I've heard many of people say that any temp gauge from the factory is crap. They don't work accurately. Once they are in the red zone it's already toasted. IF you look at a factory gage and hammer the gas it pretty much doesn't move. Got an after market one with the sensor it goes up and down with the touch of the gas. Just my experience :cheers:

I usen an Interceptor Scan Gauge by Aeroforce. It will monitor apprx 26 funtions, including trans temp, 2 at a time and plugs right into your OBD II port under your dash. It is a std size round gauge and I mounted mine in a gauge pad on the "A" Pillar. You can google Aeroforce or Interceptor and find their website. I have never heard of anyone dissatisfied with this gauge.

 

Search Interceptor or Scan Gauge on this forum and you will find a good deal of discussion about them and I have some pics of mine posted as well.

 

Also, if you are working your truck and it does not have a good aux trans cooler, you need one. PM me if you have any questions concerning this or again, you can serach this forum for trans coolers and find a lot of info.

I have the same gauge as C&A, and I purchased it really just for the Trans Temp as I tow a 6000lb trailer.

Works great....I highly recommend it. And it's a lot cheaper/easier than swapping out the cluster.

thanks for the replies guys. Right now I'm thinkin an autometer 3552 sport comp gauge and a pillar pod. does anyone know of any pods I can order that are already color matched to the grey interior? also those with the gauges what is the average trans temp you see when not under heavy load? i have no aux. cooler at the moment, which i rarely tow more than 2000lbs but I've pulled 14,000lb a couple times, not too long of a distance though with no problems, but i don't trust an automatic. Honestly the only thing my truck needs to be my "perfect" truck is a 5spd.

Matt, if you decide to use a std gauge, you will need to drill a hole in your pan to mount the sensor. There is a port in the drivers side of your trans but you cannot use it. It is a dead port meaning there is fluid behind the plug but it does not flow. It is there for testing purposes only. For a temp sensor to work properly, the fluid must be moving. You can also mount the sensor in a line but it must be grounded for it to work. I researched this heavily before buying the Interceptor. Unless you want to drop you pan an drill a hole in it, the Intereceptor is your best route.

 

For the gauge pod, I too used an Autometer brand pod but it only comes in black. I bought SEM interior plastic paint and it matched perfectly. Just wash the new pod in warm soapy water, let it dry completley and take you time with several light coats. I bought an A Pillar from a salvage yard for 10.00 so I could keep my original one in case I ever wanted to take it out.

 

As far as temps and coolers. IMO, you need a cooler even if you are not towing. If you are in a climate that does not get really cold in the winter, find a 11" x11" x 3/4" stacled plate designed cooler. If you are in a cold climate, you will want to step the size down a notch. PM me and I can offer you some part # s for CARQUEST or Hayden, who supplies us. With my larger aux cooler, I see temps in the 150s on a mid to upper 90s day when not towing. My highest temp towing has been 171 on a 94 degree day and just after pulling a nice little hill. It typically runs 167 to 169 towing on a mid 90s day.

I just did this a few months ago.

Wanted to keep an eye on the temps while towing.

Switched to full synthetic ATF and added a Hayden cooler.

 

Since the transmission comes with a temp sensor from the factory,

had a certified service tech install an OEM gauge into my factory instrument cluster.

It installs into the lower left corner.

I believe they are standard on the 2500 series.

 

Works great with a scale from 100 to 300 degrees.

Temps stayed around 175-185 deg while towing 7000lbs in the Ozarks of S. Missouri this last Aug.

He can also change your instrument cluster to a different style.

 

It cost me $150, which included return shipping.

Sent it priority mail late Monday, had it back on Saturday.

    • I usually do as well or better than the sticker for mileage. Usually better going west than east. North then South. Wind makes a difference. I’m not usually a conspiracy theorist. But it did dawn on me I’m going by the vehicle calculation. Now that would be interesting.

    • What’s missing in all this is patience and investment in the future. Buy a 170K starter home. Ten years later sell it invest in a more expensive home.     • People mislead themselves. Statistics are highly useful indicators.   Here's the tie-in to this thread. If an oil sample tests shows a wear indicator of 7 using cheaper ACDelco oil, and a wear indicator of 2 (lower = less wear) using a particular brand of Mobil oil, and wear has a linear relationship with engine lifespan, anyone could assume that Mobil is reducing wear by more than 50% (let's just say a 200% reduction for you red state people trying hard to do math) which leads to increasing engine life by 2x. Perhaps, in a vacuum, by itself, when dreamed by AI.   Yeah?! That's what the statistic is saying, isn't it?   No, it isn't. It didn't come out and say engine life is doubled. That's a very bad assumption, and a case of severe myopia by assuming something potentially untrue about the only data point in focus.   Average cost of a new car is 50k. You bet it is.   The median cost of a new car is more like 35k. Expensive cars are skewing the perception that "average" now means a $50k price of entry for a very average automobile. And that's not true. People who don't understand statistics twist the living heck out of them to mean all sorts of things they don't actually mean.   "Average" new car payment is $1000/month. Yep, it is. And in that number are all the $35k new car buyers who bring significant equity, and the $25k new car buyers who finance the car for a month just to get a rebate, and then pay it off. Know what isn't in that number? All the payments made by people who don't finance a car.   Picking one's own data point (don't have a car payment, never paid $50k for a new vehicle, my house cost $170k, I afforded a middle class lifestyle on $4.50/hr) is just a data point. Just like earning $25/hr in an area where the median home price is almost $1 Million is a data point. In fact, it's a lot of data points given that 80% of the US population lives in/around major cities. They're not idiots; the vast majority of them do it to make a living because that's where the big money is.   The highs have become higher, lows have become lower, and how your personal mileage varies is not truth for an entire country. At the same time you can't NOT acknowledge the data. While it doesn't paint YOUR personal picture, it certainly tints the reality that you also live in, as does your single data point.    
    • Glad you had success with it. I did as well, but about 5-6 months later it returned. Tried again, same result. This was after the dealer made several attempts and never even got it to slow down.
