Header & Exhaust For 8.1

I have been 'net researching headers and exhaust systems for my new ride and am surprised to have found that many performance equipment manufacturers do not have go faster - pull better stuff for the 8.1.

Being old school and not familiar with chipping etc, my first step in achieving more low end torque for towing, and better fuel mileage all round, is to increase intake and exhaust flow.

I have pretty much decided on a Volant CAI with their new PowerCore dry filter but am running into problems finding headers and performance exhaust from the same manufacturer or determing compatibilty of these components from separate suppliers.

I have also noted at least one exhaust sysyem with disclaimer "not with 5W hitch".

Any and all recommendations welcome.

Thanks

Get a mail order tune if you really want something to wake the motor up. A CAI + cat-back system will really see some increase in power if you get that tune to go with them.

I have also been looking for a new exhaust setup for my 8.1L. At summit racing all I can find is shorty headers. Tbyrnemotorsports has some good stuff he has stainless works long tubes. I have seen alot of talk about TOG(Those Other Guys) hearders on 8.1Ls but I cant seem to find them. I've also been looking at changing my intake to a volant CAI instead of my current airmax. Did you find the volant with the powercore dry filter online? I found the intake for $259 but havent heard/seen anything about a dry filter by them which is really what I want to run. I have also heard many good things about PCM tunes on 8.1s and I'm currently researching them.

After I first purchased my truck I contacted Banks about performance up grades. They told me that they were developing a system for the 8.1L. I'm still waiting for it to come out. They make headers for the workhorse motorhome with the 8.1L. I was told that the factory set up is so good that it did not pay for them to R & D a new system.

Don't waste your time/money on shorty headers as they're just not worth the it for maybe 10 HP. Long tubes will make some HP and Stainless Works are the only ones I've found. Waiting for a set for a Suburban now. They make them for the trucks but it won't fit the burb. I'm running a Volant CAI with the snorkel, Ed Wright tune and MagnaFlow exhaust for now but still searching for "more". The other post is correct about the flow rates of the factory exhaust manifolds. Look at them, they look just like a set of shorty headers now plus you don't have to worry about leaks and burning plug wires. One other thing to is I really don't thing the CAI help any in everyday driving, even towing. The airbox on the 8.1 will flow a gob of air. Hands down the "tune" has made more difference than anything, driveablility and mileage both.
