Overhead Console Power

Recommended Posts

I just got the overhead console and was wondering if you can tap into the dome light for power? I now it a constant power but say if I leave the map lights on will they shut off after the alloted time? Also what is the bracket part number to hold the overhead? Any tips from the people that have added them?

Thanks

Chris

This is one of those duh kinda questions, but have you looked to see if the factory harness is there? GM is notorious for using one wireing harness for all of a series of vehicle. it could be plug and play...

Full console or short console?

Ex cab or reg cab?

The brackets are different for each...And the wires you need should be up there.

I put the long console in my reg cab, and it was kind of a PITA.

Yeah I checked before but my luck no bracket or harness so I thought I would tap into the dome light. Short console with the pocket and map lights in a ext cab. I wish it was plug and play.

Chris,

I installed the overhead console in my Sierra. I didn't tap into the dome light because I wanted the lights to be operated separately. The part number for the bracket is 15711473 (GM Part #). I just ran my wires down from the headliner (all taped up to ward against rubbing) through the A-pillar and down to a Key-switched hot lead from the inside fuse box. Now I can operate the map lights without turning on my dome light and blinding me.

If you check out My Truck Pics there are a couple of pics of my console install. I'm not sure what the part number is for the small bracket that goes in the front part of the roof (inside the truck) but you will need it to screw the console in place. Just copy my pic of that small bracket and take it to the GM parts guy and I'm sure they will know what part # it is.

Hope this helps...

This might be a dumb question but here goes- If I tap into the dome light before the connector to the light wouldn't that be a constant power that would be able to turn on the map light without having the dome light on?

Okay here you all go

Nope. You'll have to turn the switch on that you use now, and the map light buttons will have to be on as well.

And if you have the ex-cab, I'm about 99% sure that the bracket is already in there. It's not in the regular cabs, you have to buy it.

And I need to look again, but I think that the part number for the bracket that GatorFan listed is for the reg-cabs only. There are two different brackets...The ex-cab one is different. I know this because I bought the wrong one and it wouldn't fit.

And the little bracket/screw receiver that needs to go in the little hole? The one that the front of the console screws into? Yeah...That little bastard is about impossible to find and equally hard to remove out of a wrecked truck without breaking it. I drilled a hole just next to the big square hole in the roof and tapped it out...Used my own screw. however, you might already have the little screw thingy in there.

Thanks for the extra info Wingnut, I forgot to mention that mine was standard cab specific. As for the retainer, I wished the parts-guy would have given me the number for it. I have had several people ask me what the # was and I had to tell them, "Sorry but I don't know." All I do know is that the guy looked up the cab info in his "Magical GM Parts PC" and located a picture then went to the back in his bin and found the retainer next to license plate retainers. That retainer was only 95 cents but can put a stop on installation unless you do what you did.

I hope Chris already has the retainer but I really doubt it if his truck didn't come factory with the console. At least I know mine didn't have one and you already explained what you had to do.

Good luck Chris.

No kidding it puts a stopper in it. I went to two different dealerships and talked to parts guys for almost an hour at one of them...He even let me use his PC (I'm a lot faster on a 'puter than most people  ) and no dice on the little clip/retainer/thingamabob. MS3DALE didn't have much luck either. Sounds like you ran into a guy that had done it, has a good memory for clips-n-stuff, or just got lucky.

I then went to a couple of body shops and an upholstery shop as well. This is all after tearing a few out of salvage trucks, but tearing them up in the process.

I was getting so frustrated I was ready to just give up...Then I realized that I was being a retard...I've got the tools, the capability, and the time...Just bolt that sucker up there. Took all of 30 minutes once I got going.

Oh, and the regular cab bracket for the overhead DOES NOT ACCEPT THE LONG CONSOLE, and the bracket for the extended cab trucks doesn't really fit into a regular cab (too short, if you'll believe it). I had to do some crafty sh*t to make that long console attach to the bracket on the back end.

Here we go...Thanks to MS3DALE for the clarification.

10369194 is the part number for the overhead bracket in the extended cabs, Tahoe, and Suburban.

15711473 is the part number for the overhead bracket in the regular cab trucks.

And to clarify, the SHORT console will snap right into the 15711473 bracket after you cut the holes in your headliner. There are slots for it. The long console takes a lot more work to fit into a regular cab.

But by golly by gum, I made that sh*t work.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
