Rpm Surge When Hitting A Bump...

I was on the interstate yesterday & hit a spot in the road that was kind of a cross between a hole & a bump where it looked like they had tried to patch the interstate.

 

Anyway, I hit the bump & my rpms surged by about 3-400. I thought maybe it was just a fluke or I had hit the gas or something but I could not make it do it again.

 

Today at lunch, I hit the same spot in the interstate & the rpm's surged again...Anyone know what is going on?

I would not rule out the possibility of a mechanical malfunction but I would guess you probably just moved your gas pedal foot without realizing it. Sometimes I do this too if I hit a bump just right.

Vehicles now a days are drive by wire for the accelerator which is very touchie, when you hit the bump your foot moved some on the the pedal and thats where your surge came from, try putting on the cruze control and hit the bump again, bet it wont happen.

I dont think 2002 is new enough to have the drive by wire.

But yeah use cruise and it proly wont happen.

Drove it last night & tried the cruise, it still did it.

 

I had someone on another forum suggest that when hitting the bump, I was loosing a little traction...just enough for a small rpm jump.

 

I think that makes sense, I tried duplicating it with my foot and cannot get that type rpm jump without pushing the pedal quite a bit further down, enough to where it is trying to kick down a gear.

could be torque converter locking/unlocking or whatever. i know when i hit the slightest hill or tap brakes it does it. thats usually like 200 rpms though
