Tighten Fuel Cap Dic Message With A Po442

Starting last winter I would get the "Tighten Fuel Cap" DIC message. The cap always seemed tight but the SES light would always follow this message. I have read on here that 442 is the gas cap code so I have cleaned the gas cap and filler neck area. But 442 can be caused by other problems as well. If you get a "Tighten Fuel Cap" DIC message with a 442 code does this mean the problem is in the gas cap? My next step is to swap in a new gas cap but I don't want to start throwing parts until I am sure of the problem.

I have gotten the same message a couple of times since I installed a locking gas cap and an Airaid air filter. As you, I don't want to start throwing away parts until I know for sure.

those locking caps are peices of junk, they always leak, if you have one, replace that b4 you do anything else... but most likely even if you dont have a locking cap, even the factory ones leak all the time, start by replacing the cap, if it still has a problem the dealer will smoke test it and see exactly were the leak is commming from...

just to clarify, yes that message could be set by lots of things, not just a gas cap, a leaking filler neck, the fuel pump seal leaking, a line come off the charcoal canister, or a pinhole in any of the lines from the tank to the canistor to the purge valve in the engine compartment...
