2007 Silverado 1500 Hitch And Wire Question

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 NBS Silverado 1500 Z71

According to the sticker it has the Z85 Handling and Trailering option

I have that little trailer button on the shifter

Here are my questions that I frustratingly cannot find a concrete answer to:

1) My wiring harness is the 7 wire setup, and it is attached to the rear bumper, but it terminates into some Dummy holder that just holds the wiring into the bumper. Looks like I need some sort of plug adaptor? Seems like GM went to the trouble of taking the wiring all the way back, but as far as I can see, it is unusable at this time

If I have this right, where would I get one of these things that just snap into the hole on the bumper?

2) I have no hitch on my truck. I have the step bumper and that is it. So my question to you guys is what hitch should I put on?

a) I very occasionally tow a small trailer with an ATV on it

b) I have thought about just attaching a 2" receiver to the step bumper

c) Or should I spend some money and get a frame hitch setup

My issue here is that the bumper seems to be mounted to the frame pretty securely and those bolt on step bumper receivers are rated to 3,500 lbs (and cost 60 bucks).

You need the Z82 option to have the complete setup. The female connector can be bought at a good auto parts store. As for the hitch your much safer with the weight distributing hitch than the flimsy step bumper.

Just go to your dealer and get the GM accessory hitch pkg.,It will give you not only the hitch and mounting hardware but also the connector you need for the bumper.

I wouldn't use the step bumper or a bumper receiver.

Like redvett said you need the Z82 pkg. for the factory towing pkg.The Z85 is just a suspension pkg.

I installed the hitch on my truck about 2 weeks ago... the hitch came with the receptacle that goes onto the plug you have wired up on the bumper.

*edit* It's part #19159369, it has everything you need.

I can't tell you guys THANKS enough!!!

I struggled trying to figure this thing out... Z82, Z85, Z71

Going to call the dealer tomorrow to get the price on that package.

What's a good price on that part? Does it include the hitch as well?

I picked up a wiring adapter that plugs right into the back of the truck - costs roughly 15-20 bucks from the dealer. Just a plastic adapter that plugs in so you can use it for small trailers and stuff.
