I found my 05 Silverador very easy to do. Take out the drain and fill plug, once things stop draining put the drain back in. Fill up until oil starts to come out the fill plug and put that plug back in.

I would confirm with the local dealership you have the right amount of oil and also the right kind. Have seen many discussions about what is the proper oil for the transfer case.

Have a nice day.

It's no where near as messy as taking your transmission pan off if you've ever done that. Make sure when you do it you ALWAYS TAKE THE FILL PLUG OUT FIRST. becuase you'll drain all the fluid out then might realize you can't fill it back up if the plug is siezed. As for how much it takes i've always thought a rule of thumb was it's full when it comes out the fill hole....or is that for the differential? hmmmm

Rocco,

You are correct fill it up until it starts flowing out the fill hole on the transfer case just like on the differentials. The maintenance manuals usually say go to within 1/4" of the fill hole but who can get their finger inside those small holes to see how full it is. Much easier just to go until it comes out.

Have a nice day.

I did this twice. Once on each of my last two Silverados. As stated make sure you remove the fill plug first before you drain. Not being able to refill due to a frozen fill plug isn't good. I used the GM "smurf" autotrak II fluid (it's blue) from the dealership. It took two one-liter bottles (even in the good ole USA the stuff comes in a one liter bottle) to do the job-had just a little left over. It ran around $5+ per bottle. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the bottle above the fill plug so gravity will allow it to flow. A pump is highly suggested, or at minimum you'll need a flexible hose that screws on top of the bottle. As mentioned fill until it runs out the fill hole. Good luck

Agree on the pump. I got one that screws on the top of a one gallon jug. Just pump until it overflows and then put the fill plug back on. Also agree on Autotrak II only in the diff. 2 qts sound right but I just leave the gallon jug full for the next time. I change it every 50K.
