I have an 01 Silverado ext. cab 4x4 115,000 miles i was driving the other day and all of a sudden i herd a loud noise right underneath my feet, my exhaust broke at the flange before the cat. not just cracked, when i put it on a lift and could see flames shooting out of the header i took it to a muffler shop they want a $1000+ to fix it. I am a college student is there any one who had this happen to them? or have any suggestions on what i can do? please let me know, thanks

do you mean the manifold broke....??

If so, just go get a used manifold, unbolt the old one, clean off the gasket, buy a new gasket and bolt everything back together. Shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks for everything and beers for some help if you cannot do it yourself.

1000 bucks...you could get a set of LT headers for that. :dunno::crackup:

no it broke at the flange b\c they are both connected together at the header i can see that, the actuall exhaust pipe broke off between the header and the flange

That means you need a new Y-pipe.

They are pretty expensive, but you can get a second hand one for cheap. 0505htp_truck_13_z.jpg

OR.............

I assume that you mean that the pipe broke off just after the triangular flange...am I right?

If this is the case...that should be next to nothing to get fixed...all they have to do is cut the pipe off just before the cat, replace that section with a fabricated one, any shop can do that, than drill a hole and insert a new O2 bung and weld it all together. Depending on the amount of deterioration, you may have to buy 3 new bolts and a new flange too. Still shouldn't be more than a couple hundred though.

All this shop wants you to do is buy a new Y-pipe and cat setup so they can do it in an hour or 2 and make the largest profit possible.

I'd go to another shop first off....take this pic with you, show them whats broken and ask if they can fab something up to Fit in its place.

Or...

Drop the exhaust, get some sheet steel and weld the pipe back together with the help of a buddy. It wont be pretty but it would work in a pinch.

If you drive a Silverado around you ought to know someone with a MIG welder.

dealership for the flange...Quickest place to get them.

They're about 25 bucks each and about $10 for the 3 bolts.

Thats the last time I priced one anyway.
