Painting Rough Plastic Parts?

Recommended Posts

I think I would like to go with a kind of "sport" look on my Sierra by painting what is now black.

I have been thinking about getting my:

mirrors (they are the one-peice)

door and tailgate handles

front air dam

GMC logo (smooth)

I know a guy that does good paint work, but are these rough plastic surfaces paintable with enough sanding?

What about the GMC logo, will that thing just pop off so I can get one to paint white?

Thanks for any advice.

They are paintable but if you plan on smoothing them make sure to go very slow and get every single bit of grain. becuase if you miss it they will stick out like no other. I would sand it first then use a thick sandable filler primer to go over that and see how that results. Good luck with it lets see some pics when your done.

As said above, just sand it down. Same process has been used for years on dash and interior pieces. Once that's done, the shop will use an adhesion promoter and then paint it just like any other piece. A flex agent should be added to the paint though to help it withstand the expansion and contraction of the plastic.

Thanks guys.

Ill see if I can get him to paint them soon. But I will have to take off the door panel to access the handles, correct?

What about the tailgate handles?

I replaced all my handles and tailgate handle

I have the 4 door handles and the tailgate handle

if you need your truck and dont want to drive around with no handles while they are getting painted

I want to get rid of all five, I will even throw in a set of black mirror caps. PM me if it sounds like a plan.

after all you only want to take those door panels off once, they are a little bit of a PITA

I've got a 07 NBS Silverado. Just talked to the auto body shop and they told me that the could paint the two door handles and the tail gate handle and the front plastic part under my bumper for $250.00 that includes taking it of and painting them Oh it also includes painting body side molding and putting it on.

:driving: $250? That sounds way higher than what I was expecting to pay.

And Im starting to wonder if I should get the plastic under my bumper painted? Im afraid that rocks or debris will destroy it, or Ill tear it off when off-roading.

Heres what Im currently trying to decide:

black handles and black wheels

OR

white handles and chrome wheels.??

My local body shop told me $250.00 to prime them and make them smooth like the rest of the truck or $125.00 just to paint them the way they are (rough).
