Outlaw Cai

I bought a Outlaw CAI off of EBAY for $140 shipped last week. I have a 07 NBS LT2 EXT. 2WD VMAX. It was delieved today so after work I had a chance to install it. The install is pretty staight forward and took about 20 minutes. The only hard part is you have to push real hard to compress the rubber seal to get it in the correct position to bolt it down. I will get it out on the road tomorrow and see if the butt-o-meter and sense any difference. I will also keep track of MPG and post later any changes I see.

Yeah try installing one in a truck that has a clutch fan, there is next to no room between the throttle body and the fan shroud. It took me many bad words to complete that.

Don't expect much, except more sound (which is good too). A CAI alone does very little if anything as far as performance goes. Coupled with a tune and exhaust it will help though.

If you had an Outlaw, I'd wager you'd be singing a different tune. Try one; I double dog dare you.

Why? What makes the Outlaw better? It's a box with a high flow filter and a tube to the throttle body. Can't see much rocket science involved here. The engine will only suck as much air as the rest of the system will allow. As long as the intake is not the bottleneck, it will not make much difference in performance. If you add any CAI alone, it will not be the bottleneck.

With that said, I do think a CAI alone will help with performance at high rpms when the engine is trying to breathe heavy. But how often is that? Down low is where the help is needed getting these 6000 lb bricks moving.

I know the CAI will not do much without a tune. I have a 05 Mustang GT and added a CAI with a tune and that really woke up that car. This is just the first step. I have not made up my mind which direction to go with the tune, custom or mail order. I am looking for a tuner in the Chicago area to see what they have to offer compared to all the mail order guys. Before I do anything I want to find a backup PCM to save the stock tune but can`t find one a decent price! I may have to go with a Predator but that will be a last resort.

Guys I know im gonna get flamed for this but its not a true cold air intake if the filter is in the engine bay. CAI means filter out of engine bay.

Puts fire resistant suite on, gets fire putting out thingy, checks if its working on younger brother, and stands tall and waits for flames.

Actually, the intakes (stock and aftermarket) that have the in-box filter take in their air from a opening in the fenderwell, not from inside the engine bay. But I do see your point since the filter box is inside the engine bay and does heat up from higher temps in there. So, either they are both CAIs or neither of them are. The advantages of the aftermarket CAIs are the lack of the 3 noise suppression bladders. They also minimize flow restriction and volume of air in intake, so the IAT's are lower in an aftermarket CAI vs a stock one.

I'm not gonna flame you (at least for this  ), what you said is true. But, there are a lot of individuals that don't want to hear any of that type stuff  .

Fire estinguisher? (SP??)

Outlaw and volant have the advantages of a 3"-4" hole in the bottom of the airbox, which should get some cooler air, if not you can buy the ram air tube which links up to that hole, or fab up one yourself. Either way these 2 units and the factory unit draws air from the fender well.

I won't flame you, but I will disagree. I have a AEM brute force which just has the cheap heat shield. According to my scan gauge as long as I'm moving the intake temperature is only a few degrees hotter than the outside temperature. When you stop and idle then it starts to rise, but that is also true of the stock air box as well.

AEM has you remove the panel under the stock airbox so it is drawing in air forward of the fender.

I agree with the comments that you need more than just the intake. I installed the AEM first and so no change in MPG. Only when I installed the Corsa did I see a benefit of about 1/2-1 MPG better (1/2-1 normal driving and a solid 1 MPG benefit when towing). The tune is next.

Just my experience...
