Fuel Tank Size?

I'm getting conflicting stories on fuel tank size for a 2006 Suburban 2500 with 8.1 Liter. I've been told 34 gallons and 37.5 gallons, which one is it? I know it's two seperate tanks but the gauge sees it as one.

Thanks for your time

Hi,

My 2000 2500 Suburban has the 37.5 gallon tank. Larry.

The conflicting differences in fuel capacities you are reading may also have to do with the difference between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Suburbans, as the rear suspension systems differ dramatically between these two models, and the tank capacities are limited by overall packaging constraints back there.

In your case, you definately have more than 34 gallons. Published capacities for the 3/4 ton 2000-2006 Subs have ranged from 37.5 to 38.5 to 39. Some differences might be due to "marketing rounding." Some might be due to a tank change around the time of the 03 refresh.

One tank pumps into and balances the other tank. Fuel is feed into one tank.

On a 2006 2500 Suburban, the aft axle tank connected to the fuel filler is nominally 11 gallons. The midship tank (connected to the aft axle tank) is nominally 26.5 gallons. The midship tank shape is slightly different between 00-02 and 03-06 models (on 3/4 ton series. The difference is in the rear end of the tank, at the frame rise.

With an 8.1, the only difference you'll note is whether or not you make it to the gas station across the street, versus playing it safe and filling up at the gas station on this side of the street!
