2500hd Differential Fluid Capacity

2007 GMC Sierra Classic 2500HD CCSB 8.1L 4x4

 

The owner's manual does not specify the capacities for the differentials.

 

My dealer's parts department wasn't sure so they checked with a tech who advised 2.2L front and 2.8L rear.

 

I had an arrangement (from purchase) to supply oils & fluids for engine, transmission, transfer case, and differentials and they would change them at N/C.

 

I supplied 6 x 946ml (1 US qt) bottles of gear oil (5.676l/ 6 US qt) and when there was none left with the excess 5W30 when I picked up my truck, the service advisor checked with the tech.

 

The answer was that my differential actually holds more than 2.8L, "a lot more", and they had to get more than I had supplied to fill the case which they had not charged me for. (??)

 

As future changes will be DIY, can you tell me what the front and rear differential capacities are for my vehicle?

Try this link, you can type in the info for your truck and it will give you capacities. I remember my front and rear taking about 2 1/2 qts. each. Be sure he didn't put gear oil in your transfer case. It would damage the pump. I also run 2 3/4 qts of Castrol syntec 5w-30 synthetic motor oil in my transfer case instead of ATF. ATF has a tendency to vaporize in these T/C's because of the heat and you end up running it dry. The motor oil can take the heat better and has better lubricating qualities as well. If you have the "Auto-Trac" disreguard the 5w-30 and use the blue "Auto-Trac" fluid from the GM dealer. I don't think you do, but better to double check. Hope this helps.
