I have a 1998 454 Chevrolet (7.4 L) engine in my Itasca Class C motorhome. It has 32,000 miles on it and recently developed what a I believe is lifter noise. I would appreciate any advice on how to solve this. I have heard to use Rislone and other oil additives or engine cleaners. I would like to hear from someone that has experience lifter noise in a 7.4 and resolved it. Thank you.

If it is truly lifter noise, change your oil, leave out one qt and replace it with a qt of Rislone. If this does not take care of the noise in a few hundred miles you can either get out your wrenches or live with the noise. I have seen it work several times and it is a really good product. Not an overhaul in a can or anything like that but it will work wonders on lifters.

I also have a 98 7.4l that had lifter noise, I tried every snake oil under the sun, including rislone.

nothing worked. Then I pored 1 can of seafoam in the engine oil (or GM top engine cleaner, it is the same) and drove it hard, the noise cleared up within 10 miles of driving. I am a serious fan of this stuff now.

Before the last resort of using the wrenches, try a Qt of Ford trans fluid in the fuel tank (with at least 20 gal of gas in the tank). Have seen it work many times.
