Radar Detectors

Hey guys, wanted to know if those radar detectors actually work, and which one is the most bang for the buck, and also here in Phoenix i believe we are going to start having photo enforcement vehicles, will a radar detector track this?

I have had the 100.oo dispoables, that last about year

I have had escorts, the old ones were great but the new ones are what I wold call good, and the Solo was a waist of money

The best I have found is the Valentine, By far the best I have ever owned .But very $$$$$. I bought mine on Ebay slightly used for over 350.00. Still well worth it IMO.

The good ones work and mine has saved me enough to justify its cost. I've got the Bel RX65 Detector. Escort/Bel and Valentine One pretty much own the high-end radar detector market (and for a good reason). But none of those will work if something is taking your picture (which may or may not detect the narrow radar/laser beam photo radar uses). They work with Laser and Radar (X, K, Ku, and Ku band). The better ones do have VG-2 detection, which is a radar detector detector, if that's used in your area.

For Photo Radar, there are clear license plate covers that cause the LP to appear distorted when a camera takes the picture from various angles - but that could be illegal in certain areas.

Also, in Europe that have nifty GPS systems that are internet updatable so they tell you where Photo Radar camera's are located (they have tons of 'em there), so you can slow down. Not sure if they have something like that in the US - but I imagine they will if photo radar get more popular.

Otherwise, this site has some good info and some reviews on Radar Detectors and License Plate covers.

I have the ESCORT Passport 8500,Which has now been replaced by the 8500 "X50".

Love it,I had the 4500 prior to this one and loved it also.

Hopefully I will be upgrading to the new ESCORT 9500i soon.

Definitely saved me from some tickets,As a matter of fact I have never gotten a speeding ticket in my life,And I'm 35.

I hope I didn't jinx myself

+1 on the Valentine one

you can send your module back to the company every two years or so and they will upgrade your unit to current specs

i too think my escort has paid for itself. however with instant on radar; if you are the only one on the road; like i was; and that thing goes to screaming; you probably just got a nice gift certificate from the county or state. learn to use it wisely in high traffic areas; freeways; major roads etc

I am in law enforcement and i can tell you ANY radar detector will give you about a 50/50 chance. If your just cruising and the patrol car is cruising with his radar on....yea it works. But if they are setup somewhere especially using laser they won't hit on your vehicle until you are in range and by then it's too late, i don't care what detector you have.

I have to agree Guitarstar. GET ONE!!!!!

IV had mine for about 5 months.... I live in Texas and i drive across state several times per month.. im going to say 90% of the time this device will detect the Po Po before u can even see him, i got it Siting maybe 3 in. above my dash right above the windshild wipers and works GREAT!!! Hills and curves in the road dont stop this baby... nice bright screen and tone of modes u can set.. iv owned two other detectors in the past and were by far not as good as the whistler..

I think if u buy from their web site ur lookin about 200$ i got mine off ebay for 105$ best 100 iv spent in a long time.. it paid for itself the first time i travled across state..

IF U GET A DETECTOR GET A WISTLER!!

no i do not work for them. lol.

But to answer ur question.. if i understand ur question correctly, NO. Houston has these Photo sensors are Stop lights all over.. they catch red light runners and people stoping on cross walks and people not stoping completly before making a right turn on red...

the only way to protect urself from the photo thingy's is to look into the FILM that covers your Licance plate... it somehow blurs ur numbers so the camera cant see. but im not to sure if those work any more.

goodluck,

I have the Escort 8500 X50.

I would only every buy this type or a Valentine V1.

These two have always been rated the top two by car and Driver magazine for years.

Same here, Escort 8500 X50B. I love my detector and it deffinatley works its just not a fail safe for speeding. I've never seen a V1 in action but if I ever need to replace my 8500 I'd like to try out those arrows

This.

If the radar isn't on, that detector is just an ugly ornament.

I only use mine on the highway when on a road trip...In town, I simply don't rip around or speed much.

Another 1+ for Valentine One

It has saved us many times. Most of the time the laser will pick up when it hits the car in front of you (if there is one). We have also been on many trips (with a group of cars) and the Valentine will always pick up the signal before the other brands that our friends have. Love the arrows, worth the $$$$
