Off-road Fuel

I was wondering if anyone knew or had any experience with off-road fuel in a new 2007/2008 Duramax? One of my crew may have poured some low sulfer off-road in one of our trucks and I've been told it can mess up a censer and cause the fuel mileage to drop. If that is the case, how can this be remedied? I know that the mileage did drop and I'm hoping a few gallons of fuel won't cause much of a problem. Thanks.

Well ok, I was worried we have a problem. The truck only has 8500 miles on it and a short tiem ago I was getting around 15/16 miles per gallon but it has been showing only around 14 latley. Thank you for your help, I guess its nothing.

your fine, didn't hurt a thing. i run into this question ALL the time. i'm a generator tech, and the new tier 3 diesel generators are suppose to run on ULSD. (just like all the new on-road diesel trucks). but more than half of them run plan old low sulfer #2 fuel oil.

if u run that fuel all the time, it might clog the particulate filter but that's about it.

I'm just a little curious - you're a diesel generator tech, and that makes a you a source for Duramax engines? Most Tier 3's still have #2 diesel engines in them - they'll run ULSD, but designed for #2 also. You're not going to clog up the particulate filter (DPF) with ULSD - you're going to clog up your fuel injectors!

True, nothing was screwed up by putting a few gallons of LSD in your new Duramax, but it probably took a few thousand miles off the life of your fuel injectors.

that sucks. I must, by now, be at the end of the useful life of my injectors.

Many of us have been using LSD for a year, legally. 50,000 miles and 3000 gallons of LSD so far.

Where do you come by this speculation? And why would anyone think that sulfur content is a function of paid taxes?

O.K. assume I know nothing and you would be on point. But it seems to me that if you have less sulphur, the injectors and such wouldn't get clogged up as much. Please explain the flaws in my logic.

You guys need to open your eyes and READ THE POST!!!

The post is about the NEW 2007/2008 LMM Duramax that requires Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel, which has <15 ppm sulfur. The fuel injectors on the LMM are designed for <15 ppm sulfur. Every diesel engine made before the 2007.5 model year are designed for Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD) fuel, which has <500 ppm sulfur.

masterp2, you have an older generation Duramax (LLY) that was designed to handle up to 500 ppm sulfur (LSD or ULSD). E-B-D is asking about the new LMM engine that is not designed for anything more than 15 ppm sulfur - only ULSD. If you run a few tanks of LSD through the new Duramax (2007.5 or newer), you will completely clog the fuel injectors, among other things...

Ok, so I looked deeper into my situation and my guys told me they filled the tank twice with Off road, Low Sulfer (15) fuel. That's two tanks of the low sulfer off road, does anyone feel I have done some damage? If I have, I would really like to take care of the problem since my truck is quite new with only 8500 miles. Thanks everyone.

I would call a dealer and ask them, since nobody here is a duramax service tech and can give you a definitive answer including myself.

I talked to my dealer today and his advice was to stay away of the off-road even if it is low-sulfur. He said problems would follow such as a blocked Catalytic converter, which is very expensive. He also said that I should be ok with the little OR fuel used. I love the fact that trucks have become cleaner and more powerful, heck my truck is very comfortable and I love driving it. I just don't like the complications of making a mistake and having the potential to cause major damage. I remember when a diesel engine would run on just about anything, now we pay more for our fuel and have to pay extra attention to what goes in the tank.

Thanks for the help.
