Tailgate Question

Does anyone know for sure whether the 2008 tailgates are common for all models? Specifically, I am wondering if you can fit the 1500 (shortbox) tailgate on the 3500HD (longbed)?

 

I really like the 1500 tailgate top plastic rail piece - it looks like it screws on with 4 screws. Can it replace the 2500HD/3500HD plastic top rail piece?

 

Is it hard to remove the 2500HD/3500HD plastic?

not real sure on the 08 but I put the better tailgate cover off a 1500 z71 on to my 03 2500hd. taking the old one off was easy, it just got caught on a 800lb bail of hay and pulled right off, there is only 2 sided tape holding it on. The tailgate already had the holes for the cover and I went to lowes and got the rubber plugs with a nut in it like they used from the factory at a fraction of what the dealer wanted. look on ebay for the cover I bought mine for$15 shipped. when people put caps on these come off, so you could also call a dealer that sells and installs truck caps, my buddy got his there for$25.if you need the part number from lowes I still have a bag in my garage I just need to dig them out, let me know.
