What's The Big Difference ?

Hello all! I'm new here and I just bought and received an '08 GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax last week, and so far, I LOVE IT !!!

But I have a question for all of you ...

Is there really a big difference whether or not you "break-in" a truck properly or not?

Also, is there a difference whether or not you tow too soon?

I was told to break-in the vehicle properly first and NOT TO TOW ANYTHING before 1,000 miles.

Is there REALLY a difference or a down-side to this? My buddy bought a Chevy 2500HD Duramax and was not told anything about a "break-in" or a "no-tow" period.

Any insight on this subject would be greatly appreciated !!! Thanks guys!

I would think that every engine needs atleast 1,000 miles to ware in and run correctly before being worked hard.

This is a never ending argument. Some say break them in easy for any tolarance issues to wear into working order, no excessive heat...blah,blah,blah. Some people say you need to get into it to build up pressure to properly seat rings and seals etc... blah,blah,blah. So far I don't think there's scientific proof to validate either meathod. Do which ever one makes you comfortable. Me...The thrashing started on the test drive!

We have this same discussion on my motorcycle forum...some say ride it hard to seat the rings, some say dont. The ones that do claim to have more HP...I dunno.

This time of year it is not all that important. Winter keeps the truck cooler, such that less heat is developed. I would still not tow any hills with heavy loads, for at least 500 miles.

The "drive it like you stole it" suggestions are valid, and when you look at general recommendations, this is exactly what you do; hammer it, then ease up, repeat 1000 times, spending 3/4 of the time being light on the throttle (cool down). Heavy Towing does not allow this, and too much heat is created, causing the wrong surface preparation, most call it glazing IIRC. That must be avoided. I definately do not suggest 1000 miles of babying it.

I'd prolly give it 1,000 or so before towing enything heavy like a camper, but a fishing boat wouldnt hurt anything (that is if your local lake isnt frozen).. Personally I would take it easy for a few hundred miles or so, then change the oil (just to make sure a stray particle of metal or something isnt in there), and then beat the hell out of it...
