Best Way To Touch Up Chips?

Recommended Posts

In the spring, I want to go over my truck and touch up all the chips. I have some small (the biggest one is about the size of "0"). What's the best way to touch them up, that won't chip again? I bought some of the walmart touch up primer, put that on, and then put the touch up paint over it. That didn't seem to hold very good. What's the right way to do it?

Typically, what I do(and this might not be the best but it seems to work) is wash my truck really good, then i get a little bottle of the GM touch-up stuff and depending upon the size of the chip i either use the brush in the bottle or a toothpick. I do my best to get it as smooth as I can, and just hope no one but me ever sees it again. After a day or two and I know it's all the way dry, I'll wax that spot and be done with it. Mine haven't re-chipped and seem to be doing fine. I'm sure there are some guys who know better ways but mine works and they're not super noticeable so it's alright by me.

Same here except I grab a book of matches (the soft ones) and use the flat surface of a match to smooth the touch-up paint over the chip after I apply it like jhoff did. Saw a body guy do it once, works pretty well for me.

I do pretty much the same thing..clean the area well..go over it with a clay bar if you have one. Duplicolor sells prep wipes that work well too. I just picked up a bottle of Duplicolor touch up paint with the brush and the ballpoint pen applicator. The pen is great for small chips as a small amount of paint comes out at a time. Another coat, clear coat, then a coat of wax and you should be good.

I have seen the trick with the matches been done by a body guy too. It is important to start with a clean surface, either use the prep wipes as described or wash with a solvent like acetone, but dont get it everywhere.
