New Silverado Wheel Replacement Question

Recommended Posts

I just picked up my new Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LTZ 4x4, love it and have whopping 85 miles on it!

I have the 20 inch wheels and tires, and driving in the ice and snow here in AK, they suck.

I have found a few sets of 17 inchers on craigslist so I can throw some snow tires on, but what is the deal with the Tire pressure monitoring system? What wheels are compatible? Hardcore chevy guy that I am, I have not done this research and know little about it. My last one was an '04 2500HD and didn't have it...

Thanks!

Those systems suck. Just fixed the flat by using the full spare on the Jeep. d**n light for the tire sensor will not go off. Good luck and post what you find!

Thats a good point....I bet the spare doesnt have the sensor...I never thought about that.

yea, the spare wheel/tire do not have the tire pressuer monitor system stem. i found this out the hard way as i wanted some some good snow tires and didnt want to run thru winter with the factory 20's. i boguth the wheels and tires put em on my truck and the darn DIC said tpms error. this isnt something you can turn off! my dealer ewanted $65 bucks for each stem! @ wholesale price was slightly better art $45 a pop.

i got the part number thru them and went onto GM Parts direct.com. their special internet price was $32 each. plus about $30 to ship em to my door. better deal but had to wait abotu a week for them. sears installed them free for me.

my truck was programmed to run the tire pressure at 35 psi (factory 20's) when i put on my new winter tires and rims with the TPMS stems i had to make sure i didnt run the psi's in the tires more 5 psi over the 35 set in the computer, or will set off the error. dealer can reporgram it, but i didnt both. come spring i put the 20's back one. plus my winter tires can run at 35 psi to 65 safely. (80 psi max)

Okay, thanks.

I did the research and found the wheel sensors for $30 each. I found some 17 inch stock aluminum rims for $250 and will get some snow tires mounted up (not sure what size). I am sure these 20s will be sweet on the pavement once I actually see some around April :D

Well I lucked out. I found a guy with a new '08 who went and bought some very nice 17s and new Good Years and mounted them on his truck. The TPMS went wild and he went back to the tire shop, they told him he was out of luck, and to live with it. He put his stock wheels back on and sold me everything for $300!!! I kept my mouth shut, came home, researched the GM part number and snagged 4 brand new sensors on Ebay for $80. I love these 20s but the 265/75r17 Good Years will do much better in all this winter I have here. The 20s will go back on in April, thanks for all the help!
