Swapping From 4.8 To 6.0

Well here is my question...

My buddy's 2005 GTO met its end from a Tundra and his car will probably be totaled. He told me if this happens his dad will buy the car and part it out and I had first dibs on the undamaged 6.0 :( . I was wondering if all I need to make the swap is the engine (of course) and the ECM from the car or do I need to buy an ECM for a truck instead. Is there anything else I would need to make this engine swap work for my truck? I have a 2000 SCSB 4.8L 4X4 with a 4L60E tranny and a G80 with 3.73 gears. I was thinking about getting a tune and doing some other mods to my 4.8L but if I can get this 6.0L cheap (buddy discount) I figured this would equate to the performance I am looking for.

Any tips/info would help.

Thanks,

Sounds like fun.You might try http://ls1truck.com/

Thanks for the info. I have been reading a little more about it on their site. It doesn't seem too difficult and it appears as if all of my accessories will bolt up. I will have to wait around and see what his insurance company says. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again,

Well...the Ls2 is drive by wire so your going to have to figure out how to set that up, then there's the fact that the 6.0L will eat your 4l60e for lunch. Your going to have to beef up the tranny while your at it.

Have fun. Probably going to have to change the wiring harness out and the computer to run that different motor. It can be done but its going to be a pain the the arse.

Your 4.8L is based on the LS1 which has thecam sensor in the back behind the intake, also your knock sensors are located in between the heads in the lifter valley. The LS2 from that GTO has the cam sesnor in the front on the timing chai8n cover, and the knock sensors are located on either side of the block. You will need adpater harnesses to make it all work. You can find these adpaters from Speartech.

You can use your stock computer to operate the LS2, any one with tuning software liek HPTuners can do that for you. Your engine accessories will bolt up to the long block, as well as the truck intake. It is any easy swap if you have the mentioned adapters, just like pulling and re-installing the eingine. Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions.

So he can use his truck intake and not the gto's drive by wire one? Cool, how much performance loss is there by putting the truck intake on?

Yea, he can use the truck intake.. The truck intakes actually flow a little better aside from the ls6/l76 ones..

UPDATE...

Well my buddy's insurance company is dragging their feet  . They did say it "might" be totaled but they would like to have another dealer look at it to ensure the damages are more than the car is worth. The good thing is the engine will be mine if his stupid @$$ insurance company will finish with all of their red tape crap. As I said in the initial post, he said I have first dibs on the LS2 but they have to make a decision first. The funny thing is he already has a Trans-Am WS6 but he loved the GTO more! He said he will leave his T/A in the garage and buy a POS to drive to work (the gas is killing him). :)

I will keep you guys updated as soon as I find out. Thanks again for all of the info. I was starting to worry about all of the things I had to do in order to get this badazz motor in my Sierra. I can't wait to pull up next to someone in a ricer and smash the pedal down when the light turns green. It will be fun melting 33" mud tires and watching them choke on the smoke!

If it's an LS2 engine, it may be more trouble than it's worth, unless you really like to dig into things. Besides the knock sensor relocation (not a big deal), the crankshaft reluctor wheel has more teeth. I believe it is 58 teeth versus 24 for the 4.8, although I could be wrong, but they are way different. This is not something that can be calibrated for with HPTuners (I know because I have HPTuners). You would probably have to use the goat's ECM, then have the security system matched to your truck's BCM, plus all the wiring etc.. If you tear the engine down, you could have a shop install the old-style reluctor wheel, but I'm not sure if the differing cam sensors can be resolved. IMHO it would be better to either buy a used LS1-style 6.0L from a reputable junk yard, or buy a new crate engine, which is what I did. On a more positive note, whichever way you go, you will be very happy with the results.

EDIT: An idea. Sell the LS2 engine on EBay, and use the money to buy an LS1-style 6.0L. Problem solved :(.

Thanks for all the info/advice. We (my buddy and I) should find out today what the results of the insurance company are. I was looking at the LQ4 in case the insurance company decided to fix the car. I know that if they do, my bud will more than likely sell it because he won't want a goat that has been operated on. Regardless of which way this turns out, I do plan on changing out my 4.8 for a 6.0 in the very near future. It appears as if everything on my 4.8 will bolt up to the 6.0 and I should be able to use my ECM and have it reprogrammed. I will just have to buy new headers unless my pacesetters will bolt up and definitely get my 4L60E prepared for the extra torque and horsepower or buy a 4L80E. I guess after that I will have to look into an electric fan setup as well.
