99 Silverado Lost Reverse

99 Silverado 4wd 5.3 auto

I was backing up to hook up a trailer in about a foot of hard crusted snow and suddenly lost reverse. It let go as I was trying to inch back a little closer to the trailer. Because of the crusty snow you had to have a fair amount of gas into it to overcome the hard snow. Kind of like holding the brake while accelerating. Anyway, I gave it a little tap on the gas to creep back and break through the snow when I heard a clunk or bump and then immediately lost reverse. I can still go forward atleast in 1st. I didn't take it far enough after this to see if it would shift to any other gears.

Anyone with any ideas????

Scott,

I don't know how many miles you have on your truck but my 99 lost it's reverse at about 84,000 miles. My understanding was that they used some plastic parts in the tranny and that the continual backing out of the driveway and not coming to a complete stop (the weight of the truck still has some inertia) caused the failure. I had it rebuilt using the Corvette tranny internals (servos, etc...)and it was still going strong at a 172,000 miles before I totaled the truck. You may not have the same problem as I did but if you need a rebuild make sure they upgrade the stock components. Best of luck and I'm sorry for the news cause it's gonna hurt the pocket book if it needs a rebuild.
