Firewall Advice

Hey Guys,

 

I am trying to wire up some stuff (siren, gps) in my truck and I dont know where the best place is to go through the firewall on my truck. I stuck a screwdriver through a rubber grommet and I saw smoke come out??!! Anyway, does anyone have any advice?

Advice? Don't stick screwdrivers through rubber grommets!

 

Always drill a new hole and install a new grommet, then silicone both sides once you finish your install. It's much better than frying something or burning your truck down. You can usually find space up under the dash on the passenger side. Make sure you know what is on the other side before drilling... or it might be like the screwdriver incident - only worse.

Thanks, does anyone else have any pointers. Will a standard 1/2 drill bit be OK to use?

 

I am hoping the screwdriver didnt "screw" things up. My truck is still in one piece, but the smoke def made me nervous. I though I was going to have to call the FD... worst part is, i am on it.

I had to run some stuff through the firewall for my radio equipment (Ham Radio) took my truck to Car Toys (not sure if they have them where you live) (local aftermarket radio/alarm system installation place) and they were able do all my pre-wiring stuff for about $100.

 

Just a thought.

Hopefully the screwdriver did no harm. I usually find a spot that looks clear on both sides of the firewall and take a pointed punch and create a dimple that I can locate outside to be sure... Once you have a good spot, the dimple makes a great pilot for the drill bit. Any good auto parts store should be able to provide you with a grommet for your newly drilled hole.

 

Using caution, this should be no problem to do. Remember to silicone up inside and outside to keep moisture out.
