Repairing Aluminum Rims

Recommended Posts

Some nice person loosened some lugnuts on my truck... and i was fortunate enough to pull over just intime with 1 lug nut left in my tire. Ive got 38 inch mickey thompsons on 20 inch Weld Racing Rims - Cheyennes. A couple bolt holes are messed up on the rim. Does any body know who can fix them? Preferablly in florida... becuase the rim is not light and would be expensive to ship. Please let me know asap. Thanks.

I'd check the phone book.

I see the metal shavings, but I dont see what the damage is.

Looks like the studs filed the bolt holes when the wheel was squirming back and forth on the studs. If this is a shank-style lug nut wheel, a machine shop that has a milling machine and a qualified TIG welder could fill the holes and then a simply re-bore. If this wheel uses taper-seat lugs same thing, just add the chamfer operation for the lug seat. Probably cheaper than wheel replacement.

There must be a place in Daytona or Orlando. Try 411.com

Miami is Wheels America's FL location. I deal with several wheel refinishers and do straightening myself. I know of no national refinisher that does lug seat repair.

Thanks Fred. I never tried to get a wheel center fixed. Didn't know if they could or not.

My pleasure. It seems that lug seat repair is the "third rail" of wheel refinishing. There is possibly a well-reasoned fear of litigation in this area. The other reason is the flat-rate-based pricing structure of cosmetic work and the avoidance of expensive time-consuming and exacting structural work. In most cases it would simply price itself beyond the price of replacement.

Brian, I can't see from your pic what the damage is in the lug holes. I can imagine however, from the shavings on your tire, that is probably a job that a good machine shop could handle and your best avenue for remedy.

Im gonna go over to my buddies shop in a lil... and i will take some pics of the lug holes.. hopefully. I was told stockon wheels repairs aluminum rims.. but they are out in california. and shipping would be outrageous.

Do you think someone was trying to jack your wheels and didn't have time to finish the job or do you think someone did this maliciously to cause damage? Either way scum like that don't deserve to be living :(

Are the wheels new? It's possible that it came loose from the lugs wearing in...the same thing happened on my 2500HD but I was lucky enough that I was only going 20-25 mph before I noticed the wobble.

Rims have been on truck for over a year. I found a shop that was actually like 40 miles away... they can fix them... its 90 bucks to fill the holes with aluminum and redrill them.. all need it... so... i got away pretty cheap.
