Vortec Max Gas Milage

I am wondering what people are getting with the Max engine. I would love a diesel but at $0.50 more a gallon plus the initial upgrade price it is hard to justify. I need the power to pull a 4 place snowmobile trailer.

Thanks in advance.

Computer says I'm getting 15mpg over the 6,000 miles of driving so far with a crew cab 4x4. I can see it slide up a tenth or two on a road trip and down a tenth or two after being around town for a while.

DIC says about 16.5 mpg average (17-18 highway, 15-16 in town). Checked it manually and the computer is pretty accurate.

These new powerful GM engines seem to have a much bigger split between highway and city. With my old 5.7 Vortec (96 K1500), it would reliably get 17-18 hwy/U.S. gallon but only drop to 14.5 combined. Thats 22.5 hwy, 18.0 combined, in imperial gallons for the rest of us Canucks. I'll take the so-so city and good highway mileage in a GM compared to Dodge and Ford which usually suck both ways.

Getting about 14.5-16 mpg winter driving. Drove up to Brainerd MN for New Years pulling a 2 place snowmobile trailer, got about 13mpg. Pulling the boat in the summer gets about 13mpg.

In warmer weather I average 18-19 mpg. 90% Interstate driving. Some rush hour driving.

Will be going up to Canada at the end of Feb, 2 place trailer, snowmobile in the box and a crap load of gear. Will see what kind of MPG I get that day.

Man... I'm only getting 10mpg at BEST. Its probably like 2/3 city driving but it still seems really low. I don't really have a heavy foot (at least not THAT heavy).

Depending upon how I drive, I get anwhere between 12 and 15 average (70%city/30% highway). I usually get 12 when I have my Edge programmer set on Extreme and can't keep my foot out of it. If I try to get good mileage I get 13-15. On one long trip (300 miles of interstate only) I got 17.5 with the cruise set on 80 mph. I don't know what my overall average is, because I always reset the tripometer and average economy when I fill up. I have noticed that it matters what kind of gas I use. Believe it or not, the worst mileage was with 93 octane Chevron. I tend to get better mileage with the gas stations that everyone tells me to stay away from. I don't use the average fuel economy on the DIC, I use the manual method of filling it up until it clicks then divide the mileage on the tripometer by the gallons pumped. It may not be all that consistent, but it is usually significantly different than what the DIC tells me.
