Where's The Transmission Cooler Line ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I asked my friend who is a mechanic if it wouldn't be much of a job to change the leaking tranmission cooler line and he said it depends on where it is exactly.

The truck is (or will be, if I actually buy it) a Sierra 1500 2003.

Thanks.

Mine runs up to my tranny cooler that is attached to the front of the radiator. look through the grill and u will see it center way down towards the bottom

There are actually 3 cooler lines.

1) From the trans to the radiator

2) From the radiator to the aux cooler if you have an aux cooler. (if so, it will be located just behind the GMC logo in the grille.

3) From the cooler back to the trans

Most of the leaks I have read about are where the rubber line crimps to the metal line on the pass side just behind the bottom portion of the radiator.

Thanks for your answers! :rollin:

Is that a lengthy job if done by an experienced mech ?

I have not looked at a Z 71 but there was a post here a few days ago that indicated the transfer case was really in the way of where the lines connect to the trans. Again, I have not looked at one.

However, if it is leaking at the crimp where the rubber line meets the metal line, I would not replace the entire line. I would carefully cut the metal line off with a good tubing cutter, make sure you wiped the end off really good to remove any small metal shavings from the cut and replace the rubber line with a good quality replacement hose using 2 clamps on each end. Tighten the clamps up until you see rubber beginning to protrude through the hose clamp. There is not a great deal of pres on this line and it will not come off.

Of course your line could be leaking somewhere else.

Let us know what you find.
