strafingmoose Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Hi guys! I have this latching problem where it's not even "hard" to latch, but the latching mechanism doesn't even seem to move a bit. If I pull the tailgate handle, nothing seems to move anywhere. Tried to slam it very hard, nothing. Then I read the manual which said to try to lift it up while closing it, same. Tried lifting it up so hard that the plastic handle started to make cracking noises, so the problem must be somewhere else. If you jiggle with the handle while the tailgate is opened, is something suppose to be moving ? Should I spray WD40 somewhere ? The guy who sold me the truck, I think he was able to latch it properly after putting the other set of tires in. Since I openened the tailgate to get them, haven't been able to close it back again. Thanks
rzauner Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Take the tailgate handle off and look at the latch assembly. Something is probably binding up. richz
mi.bowtie Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Remove the bezel thats around the latch. You will be able to see the actuating rods. Spray with break-free or some other good penetrating oil. WD-40 sucks. I just did that on my 2003 because the tailgate would not latch properly. Probem solved.
2000DV4.8 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Make sure the latch mechanism is actually open. I know sometimes the left side of mine will stay closed after I open the tailgate in cold weather. If it is not open, pull on the handle, and flip the latch so that the open end is facing out/up. I can picture exactly what I'm trying to say, I just can't actually put it into words...
strafingmoose Posted February 11, 2008 Author Posted February 11, 2008 thank you! The mecanism does seem to be jammed in the open position. No matter how hard I slam it, it doesn't clamp. I'll try some of that greasy spray.
