Why You Shouldn't Wash Your Motor

I just wanted to let everyone who has the gasser in there 800 series truck, take heed in washing your *engine*. I do not know if they changed the design on the 900 series, but I assume it did not, I would be careful on how you wash.

There are two knock sensors installed in the valley on top of the engine under the intake plenum. The only thing that keeps the water from getting in the valley, is a peice of foam on the bottom front and back of the plenum. My guess, is that its actual purpose is to prevent debris and rodents from getting under it, not the water. Also, on the wire harness, there is a rubber plug that is supposed to block off the water from entering the cavity of the sensor. The cavity looks like a funnel for all the water to flow into. Once the water gets into it, the water just sits and eats away the knock sensor. Bad design GM :) , A simple lip on the valley would help deter the water flow around the cavity. Or , simply put them back on the side of the block like the good ol 350's.

There is a TSB on this. TSB says to remove the rear foam and place a 270 degree bead of RTV around the rear sensor cavilty. Reason I know? Had to do this a few weeks ago.

motors are electric

Not to really expound on it, i know that normally a motor refers to an electrical source type...and an engine usually refers to the internal combustion type...

but an engine is a type of motor. all engines are motors, not all motors are engines.

i think its an SAT question ;)

p.s. whats the point of washing the engine? i never have, it is about improved fucntion or just appareance kinda thing?

I wash my engine about every few months, and it is mostly appearance. I like the look of a clean engine and engine compartment. Plus, if there ever is a leak, it is easier to detect. But I am going to have to look for this sensor and do something to prevent water build up. Thanks.

In this case it was an oilfield truck, the outside appearance was alot worse. They get alot of abuse, I think this time it was $6k worth.
