Turn Signal -- Intermittent Random Clicking

I have a 2000 GMC Yukon with 141K miles on it. Great truck. This is my first post here in a few years. But, recently, my turn signal started clicking randomly at intermittent times. It's just the noise -- no lights flashing or anything. It happens most often after I've used the signal and turned and the stick goes back to neutral position. But, it also happens sometimes just randomly when I'm driving and hit a bump or something. It's almost as if the part inside the steering column that controls the stick on the left side of the column wore out, and it doesn't always go back to neutral (no click) position. Anyone seen anything like this before or know what could be wrong? If so, please PM me.

 

Also, can I fix it myself? I know that taking the steering column apart can be dangerous with the airbag and stuff... Thanks! Jon

The turn signal switch is bad. This is what you will need to do

 

1. Ensure the lever is in the center or the OFF position.

 

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

 

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Pull the Fuse

4. Remove the horn switch.

5. Remove the tilt lever.

6. Remove the steering wheel.

7. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

8. Loosen the steering column bracket nuts.

9. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws from the lower column cover.

10. Tilt the cover down. Slide the cover back in order to disengage the locking tabs.

11. Remove the lower column cover.

12. Remove the TORX® head screw from the upper column cover.

13. Remove the upper column cover.

14. Remove the 2 wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness.

15. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer from the brake transmission shift interlock.

16. Disconnect the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness.

17. Disconnect the gray and the black connectors of the switch from the column bulkhead connector.

18. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws from the switch.

19. Remove the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch.

 

Install in reverse order
