6.0l And Catback Exhaust

Recommended Posts

I was at a custom exhaust shop the other day asking about catback exhaust for the 6.0L. I learned some interesting things. They told me they have done alot of testing on all kinds of exhausts...borla, magnaflow, corsa, flowmaster, b&b, gibson and others and they told me they all produce about the same power. Some do have a different sound obvisiously....flowmaster being the loudest. But the most interesting thing they told me was that everyone of these different exhausts produce a drone effect between 1600-2000rpm....but only in the 6.0L. They don't know why but they all do it. And its not only in the NBS trucks either its the previous 6.0L as well. They said they have customized in numberous ways to try to get rid of it and sometimes it decreases but never can fully eliminate it. I told them corsa says they have a patented technology to eliminate drone and they said it reduces it somewhat but its still there. I was pretty amazed by this bit of information. They told me this up front because they have so many people coming back and say there catbacks make this noise effect in the cab all the time. Makes you wonder if its worth getting it done.

hell yeah it is its awesome! :)

I really like it though, but I understand there are some that down. I say either live with it, put a resonator in it, or get a 5.3. The 6.0L is quite a loud engine.

EDIT: heres a clip of my 6.0L with aftermarket exhaust driving regular

Which is why us folks with the 6.0's keep trying to warn people when they want to go throw on a Magnaflow or Flowmaster just because it sounded so awesome on their previous 5.3. :)

If you have a 6.0, keep it stock, or go with the Corsa Touring exhaust. Then you'll be happy.

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a 08 6.0L this week. Are there big differences between the two engines? I would like the 6.0 because of more power and put mods on it, but I will put around 50K a year on it and don't want to deal with drone sounds. So I guess my question is...Is it worth it? Or should I just go with the 5.3L? Thanks for any help guys!!!

if you planning performance mods you can make a 5.3 tougher than a 6.0 with some adjustments, & since you dont like drone, go with the 5.3

The drone only applies to aftermarket exhausts. It's completely quiet from the factory, other than the mean sounding idle if you stand next to the exhaust. :) I have the Corsa Sport and it's pretty darn good. But there is a tad bit of drone around 2K on the hwy. Very minor, but if you plan on towing or carrying a large load (ie. lots of passengers/cargo), the drone will be annoyingly noticable. Hence the recommendation for the Touring system or just stay stock.

Other engines do have drone, but compared to the 6.0, it's night/day difference. Also keep in mind that some people aren't quite as sensitive to drone as others are.

If your going to put 50K miles a year on a truck then your better off with a Duramax.

When I had my H2 I put a magnaflow exhaust on it and man did that thing drone especially between 2000-2500 it sounded awesome on the outside but on the inside it didn't even sound like a V8 engine just a loud moaning sound still was worth it though cause I gained a couple mpg and didn't have to fill up quite as frequently

I put just a muffler on mine and it sounds like crap lesson learned :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I probably am, but isn't there very little difference in sound between cat-back and just the muffler. I always thought cat back was for the added looks...

The entire catback mostly provides new stainless piping ( if its a good cat back, not like Flowmasters stuff ) Somne factory exhausts are restrictive and the cat back pipes are more open & free flowing and mandrel bent. Not in our trucks case though. Also is possible for more economy gains with an entire cat back since its designed for that specific engine. Putting just a muffler and tailpipes in ( custom exhaust ) is the way to go for sound, which is my prefered style for exhaust.

Care to elaborate?

my 6.0 with a "magnaflow" replacement muffler has a nice rumble at idle....NO drone like my 04 had(actually annoying).....and it sounds amazing when on the gas....i left the entire system stock, except for the muffler
