Weird Exhaust Smell..

okay well the other day me and my girlfriend were on the way to the store and she had just walked around the back of my truck and i hear " EWW whats that smell OMG that stinks" then she opened my door and i smelled it to... and it smelled like burnt wires... and now come to think of it the other day on lunch when the guys opened the doors i smelled it too... what could make it smell like that... i do know that it is slowly leaking anti freeze... i had it looked at told it was nothing bad so i opted to take care of it when it got warm... so give me you opinoins the truck is running kinda rough on idle... and its suckin gas a little worse then usual... let me know what you think? cuz i'm stumped...

My water pump gasket was bad, and it made it stink like antifreeze before now its good, but my MPG didnt really change much. The burnt wires im not sure about.

If it is... "running rough and sucking more gas than usual"... and since you have the odd smell from the exhaust.. I would guess it is running rich and the smell is from the cat converter trying to burn all the excess fuel. Without too much luck.

 

Have you had the codes pulled? Is the SES light on?

 

Give us more detail on the Running Rough problem.

Does it kind of smell like rotten eggs? If so, it's a bad cat, which would explain the drop in fuel mileage.

thanks for the reply jim and no i have not had the time to get it in iv'e been on the road with work lately so i've needed it unfortunately, as fora as the running rough problem.. say i'm stopped at a light... at like 4-5 second intervals the truck kinda rumbles a little bit.. and i'm used to it running so quiet... also it seems like its gotten a touch louder with this new problem... i know that it is leaking collent slowly from underneath... and to answer your question no the ses light is not on.. i'm gonna take ur advice and have the codes checked ASAP...

thanks! i dunno.. it might very well be the antifreeze problem because it stinks... but it definitly has like a burning rubber smell to it... and its not all the time... once every other day i smell it...

it has more of a burnt plasticy kinda smell to it... and the millage isnt terriley worse but it is noticeable...

not sure if this was the exact cause of the smell problem.. but i had the water pump changed out last week... she quit on me and was droppin coolant... so far soo good were dry as a bone...
