Wheel Backspacing Questions

Hello all.

 

I have an 08 gmc sierra z71 crew cab. Anyone know what the backspacing is on the stock 17 inch wheels?

 

Also....I did a search but I'm still unclear.....let's say the stock backspacing is 5.5. If I buy aftermarket wheels with a backspacing of 4.5 that means that the tire should stick out an inch wider all the way around, which imo looks better but also should help me to clear larger tires as well. Is that correct or am I wrong on one or both of those points? Thanks in advance for the input.

After reading my post, I'm realizing it's kind of unclear. The two points I was talking about are:

 

1. Does the 4.5 backspace number push the tire out of the wheel well one inch more than the 5.5 inch backspace?

 

2. Does pushing the tire out help to clear bigger tires or not?
