Nbs Sunroof Sunshade

Here in Texas the summers can be pretty brutal. The sunroof in my truck has a retractable sunshade that is made of some kind of perforated mesh material. It reduces the amount of incoming light, and heat, but doesn't work near as well as a solid (fully opaque) sunshade.

When I had the windows tinted, I asked the tint guy if he could put on a real dark tint on the sunroof glass. He said that he would do it, but he highly recommended against it. He said that tinting the sunroof glass makes it get hotter which makes it very prone to shattering.

Has anyone heard of this problem? I have to take the headliner down soon to do some other stuff, so I was thinking about replacing the mesh material with something more solid.

Didn't they change to a solid material in the 08's?

Brad,

I have the same issue,I like the solid shade in my Saturn for when I want to completely block out the sun.

Anyway,The '08 extended-cabs are the same way.

Now the crew-cabs have a solid shade, but with there being a reinforcement in the extended-cab roofs there is not enough room for a solid shade to slide back, therefor they put a "blind-type" shade in that rolls up.

I had an upholstery guy look at it,and he said he really couldn't add or do anything to it to make it solid

On my 00 S10 I had a sunroof installed and had the same problem. So I had the sunroof tinted with limo. Haven't had any problems to this day. I don't think it's gonna hurt anything. And I live next door (louisiana) so I know about the heat.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to go to the dealer and ask them for their opinion on tinting the sunroof. If they say, "yeah, no problem" then I'll try to get that in writing. Maybe they'll cover it under warranty if it ever does break.
