1989 Suburban Hot Start Problem?

Morning all, I have a 1989 Suburban 1500 4x4, turning almost 200k.

Here's the problem, When I drive it on long trips. Anything over an hour, if I shut it off then try and restart it, it won't start

I can turn the key, but nothing happens, the starter solenoid won't even click.

It has to sit for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, then it will finally start back up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had this happen in one of my old Mercedes. The starter was going out. Next time that happens, try tapping on the starter while someone else tries starting it.

On a side note, when that happened to me, I was in my 1979 Mercedes, in the middle of absolutely no where. I called the Mercedes roadside assistance, and they sent out a team of two mechanics, at no charge, at close to midnight on a weekend, to help me get going. The mechanics were from a dealer almost two hours away, and diagnosed the problem as the starter going bad, and showed me that trick so that I could get myself home without having to call a tow truck.

That was almost 5 years ago, and I still remember the name of the dealer who helped me out. Some of the GM dealers that I have worked with lately could take a lesson from MB on customer service.

thanks  for the info SoCal, I was kind of looking for a place to start. I may just go ahead and replace the starter and see if that fixes the problem. I hope it will be that simple.
