Nelson Performance Tune Help/issue

Recommended Posts

I just received my Nelson Tune. I purchased brand new ECM & TCM's from Nelson directly and they programmed them and sent them to me. My problem is I asked them to completely remove my Active Fuel Management (AFM). However, AFM is still there and actually seems to stay on in V4 mode more than the stock settings, which doesn't seem to make sense? AFM straight up sucks!

When I tried doing the security relearn it didn't really need it. The first time I tried to start my truck, it acted like it was going to start, but it didn't. Then the second time it started right up. There was never any ABS or Security lights blinking at all, even during the first startup procedure. The only light that came on is the Engine light. I am going tomorrow to the dealer to have the crank relearn completed.

My question is, once I have the crank relearn, will that take away my AFM? It almost seems like they forgot to get rid of the AFM, which is the main reason why I wanted my truck tuned. I can't stand the crapy AFM, especially with exhaust...super annoying when it drops down to V4. Anyone have any ideas? I left a message for the Nelson people to give me a call, but figured I would ask some people on this board to see if anyone has any ideas or why it's doing this.

Thanks

Send Melissa and Allen an email, it doesn't sound right to me.

I hear you...I left them a message. Maybe I should shoot them an e-mail too. They probably aren't going to be open on the weekend. Either way it looks like I might be sending everything back, which completely sucks. Hopefully I can get this situation resolved. I was so excited to drive my truck this weekend too.

The performance part of the tune is likely there, go for a good drive and you will be happy in that respect. No you will hear NOTHING from them this weekend, trust me. I did get an email reply on a Saturday once however.

LOL...I have to admit I sounded like a douche a little bit, but seriously I wouldn't be talkin crap.

Especially if I drove GMC truck that looks as lame as yours. You remind me of "that guy." The guy who takes a stock truck and trys to make it look cool, but really makes it look three times more lame. Seriously dude, whats up with your truck picture too...looks pretty gay to me. What's your story?:lol:

Sorry you find it hilarious, anyhow the tunes are typically good, the customer service is lacking.

Wes, I hope you took it for a good drive and had good results other than the AFM. Keep us posted.

What's with the attack on Zach? He didn't say anything that isn't true.

As for the Tune. My tune is pretty darn good now after my re-tune. But Nelson still seems a little "overwhelmed". He e-mailed my response to an e-mail I sent just after sending him my modules. I recieved them, called and talked to Melissa, she talked to Allen about my questions, she came back and gave me the answers (well, not really, but she tried). Then about 3-4 days later, Allen responds to my e-mail and it was apparent he had no clue about what had transpired in between.

I am guessing he simply mis-understood or confused your requests regarding AFM with someone else.

Your best bet (unfortunately) is to talk to Melissa on Monday and have her talk to Allen about it. Then you will need to send your modules back. In the meantime, do NOT waste your time and money getting a Crank Relearn. You may need another one after the re-tune. I did. Yes, I know everyone says a Crank Relearn is a once-per-module deal, but Allen had no explanation as to why I needed another one after my update.

I talked to Justin at Blackbear and he said it may have had to do with the fact Allen can now lock his tunes and in order to lock mine, he had to overwrite the security portion of the ECM too.

Lemme guess, you probably have 24" ghetto wheels on your truck? Maybe a giant amsoil and K&N sticker that added 20HP? If you think my truck is stock maybe we should line them up and see what happens?

Zach,

Speaking of "lining them up", you still on for tomorrow?

Glad it worked out Jeff, after the BS. I will keep you posted on my next "experience"

Worked out? Yeah, "Tune-wise" I suppose it did. But I am still not too thrilled with the customer service and I dread the day I ever would need another re-tune.

The good news is EFI LIve is coming out with a handheld that will allow you to log your truck and e-mail the log file to Justin, then he can e-mail your tune to you. NO MAILING ANYTHING back and forth and no removing any modules.

Doesn't get any better than that unless you have a tuner locally. Which I am also considering BTW.

Very cool...will it have the re-learn function, DTCs, etc as well?

Yep, but since your never removing them, you should only need to do it once. But in my mind, that is still a big ??? since I needed another one after my re-tune. I am assuming that was a fluke or there was some "reason" (i.e. Justins explanation) for it though.
