Had A Problem Today

Hey I bought 1991 sierra 4x4 and put a 3in bl on it, I also put 16x8 helo maxx's off of my 1999 on it and the 265/75r16s(i think it could be 65 series). Today i heard a scraping and had my friend get out and look at it while I creeped along. Thought it was a bearing or something going in the front end. So I drive down the road to get to home at about 60 km/h and after a quarter mile the front of the truck dives down and i look to the left and I see the wheel go flying past me into the ditch. After it was all said and done I got out and looked at the wheel and it was deeply grooved with a chip out of it. I looked at the studs and some were bent in. My friend and I took the hub off and looked, the bearing was good, brakes were ok (not to the feelers yet) and rotor was good. The lugs didn't rip out of the rim, we didn't find them after though. Just a couple days before that we torqued them done and after the incident i checked the other rim and they were pretty tight(except for the odd one). Anyone have any idea what else could of caused this?

Not familiar with the helo maxxes, was the lug type compatible with the wheel, eg. taper seat to taper seat? shank style to shank style?

Those wheels and lugs where on my '99 for 50k+ km. Its a 6 x 5.5 bolt pattern. Everthing fit good, i jacked the truck up and shook everything hard and there was no play. Sites that sell wheels show that it fits.

I had a similar experience but not as extreem. I heard some noise coming from the passenger front sounded like lotter balls getting tossed around.

Well I guess I over torque some of my lugs and they popped off of the studs. It was just 3 out of the six so it wasnt a big deal. Its weird that they all came off do you think that you overtightened them?

No, I torqued them to 120 ft lbs, thats what the guys at Kal tire suggested. I think stock is like 140-150. I had good luck with 120, my '99 only was retorqued about 3 or 4 times at 50k km.

WOW... that bites, man.

Those are well made wheels. Are you completely sure that somebody didn't try to steal one? Maybe he loosened lugs and got spooked...

It has been sitting on the farm since we bought it. We played around in a little mud before that but for only 5 min. Do any of you guys know the price of the bearings inside those hubs? Must be pretty expensive since it is splined i think. Just wanted to replace as much as I can while I have everything off.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to my buddies mom 7 or 8 years back. She was going down the highway when the back wheel came off. Ground the metal down pretty good. All they could figure was that the lug nuts came off. Never did figure out why.

the same thing happend to my old grand prix gtp... i was driving and i heard a loud snap and about 3 miles later it sounded like i was dragging an anchor from my front bumper... i got out to check.. and one of my lugs had just miraculously dissapeared!!! and i always had my lugs torqued right... so i really dont know what would have caused that... but sorry to hear!!! hope you get her back in line soon..

my cousin had a bad prank pulled on him at a party once... somebody took like 3 out of the 5 lugs off his car.... he went to leave and the car bit the pavement real hard :shakehead:
