hey guys new to this forum. well i have a situation ihave an 01 gmc 2500 hd 4x4, i purchased it used about 6 months ago and have noticed a rattling noise under the truck( thought maybe the brakes scrubing) checked it more thoroughly today to find it is the transfer case, so i checked the oil and got about a thimble full. i put oil in and no more noise. my question is should i order the rebuild kit for the t case or should it be fine?

Check on the back sided to see if the pump has worn a hole inthe case. If this has happened, get a reman t/case. It is usually cheaper.

no holes in case but seems like alot of play at tail shaft by pushing up on drive shaft.

If there is a hole, it will be very small, and it will be located in the back half, passenger side. However, the only way to really know is to remove it and take it apart. http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=368971 This is a link to a site where the first post is great, lots of pictures. There is a new design clip out and if you do rebuilt it, I would strongly recommend using it. And you don't have to remove the transmission to get it out.
