Electrical Failure 99 Suburban

I have a 99 suburban with 170K and everything was working fine. I drove it to the store and after 5 minutes got back in and it would not start. The radio and ignition sound came on like normal but when cranking the engine everything went dead.

 

 

Symptoms:

 

Turn ignition on and the standard beep sounds and gauges seem to work but then…

 

1) Turn lights on and beeps stops and gauges go dead except the fuel gauge does a 180 completely off the chart.

 

2) Turn hazards on and a very weird sound comes from under the hood like a unlubricated wind up toy. No flashing just a very dim glow. Gauges go dead except the fuel gauge does a 180 completely off the chart.

 

3) After charging for a long time and turning the key to aux I finally got the windows to roll up without the same gauge and seemingly short effect.

 

4) Blinkers cause the gauges go dead and the fuel gauge does a 180 completely off the chart as usual.

 

5) Car will not start or turn over. It’s like there is an automatic short that is stealing power.

 

6) Interior light will come on dimmer than usual when key is in aux position.

 

 

Things I have checked:

 

1) Fuses all check out and look clean.

 

2) Battery checks out. Had it load tested at AutoZone.

 

3) No visible signs of burned wiring or lose connection. No burned smells.

 

4) Disconnected the amp and stereo which is on a separate circuit I installed myself to no avail.

 

5) Pulled every fuse while the hazards were on hoping there would be a change and help identify a bad circuit but no luck.

 

6) Disconnected the ECM and it did not change the situation.

 

 

I have a general mechanic background and have worked on my own cars all my life but not professionally. I just recently (about 6 months ago) replaced the intake manifold gasket. I have an electrical background and can follow any advice in that aspect or would like to think so. I am at a complete and utter loss here. I really have no idea what to do next other than start dismantling the components and doing ohm test but still would not know if the values I am looking at are within range or not.

 

 

Any advice that ANYONE can give me would help me greatly. This is our main source of transportation and is dire for it to be working again.

I have spent some time at our shop discussing this issue with various mechanics and have recieved a few different opinions. One thing I should point out is when I disconnected the battery and reconnected it, it did not spark or arch like there was a load on it. (actually not at all)

 

1) The voltage is being disrupted either by a corrosion or a loose connection in such a way that any load kills the circuit like a circuit braker also known as a ghost voltage.

 

2) See if arching the starter will allow it to turn over. (Although I see this as tough considering the location) If it does not check the battery terminations.

 

Thats all I got for now. Once I get home at 5pm I will tinker with it some more. I can say that these things do not make sense as this happened instantly like a component went bad but I am will to try anything. This is not an intermitant problem so it should not be that hard to find......at least I hope.

Ok, after I got home from work I did some poking around. I bypassed the starter and the altenator and everything was good until....I got to the fuse box. Doing a continuity test from fuse to fuse from the main entry terminal at the front of the fuse box for reference I found that the ECM fuse did not have continuity. I pulled the fuse out and checked the contacts and tested. From one side of the fuse to the other it registers for a split second and then goes open. I have no voltage running through the system and I am using the tone testing mode with my fluke meter.

After further checking I have found that with the ECM umplugged and checking the resistance between the two fuse contacts between the fuse block, I get a reading of 11K ohms. I believe my fuse block is the problematic peice of this puzzle. I will update my final findings later. If not for anything else... maybe for the search engines to help someone later with a similar problem. :lol:

Any advice would be helpfull but I fear I will have solved the problem before I get what I came here looking for.

Ok, its another day and I am back at it. I left off with the ecm fuse in the fuse block under the hood. Checking the two fuse contacts for the ecm fuse (with the fuse pulled out of course) I am getting a reading of 11K ohms. This should be open with no reading as the fuse should be the only path for voltage to pass but it is getting around this circuit somehow and giving me a reading. I am at a loss. I guess I will attack the ignition switch next.

I admire your persistance. I sure hope you get it figured out. I tend to stay away from electical problems myself. I always wind up getting flustered. :lol:

After getting into the steering collumn and ignition switch I stopped and started thinking (something I rarely do :lol: ) "Maybe, just maybe I am making this more complicated than it actually is"...I turned the hazzards on and touched the newly terminated batter cables on the (TOP) posts instead of the (SIDE) and it immediately started working. Autozone load tested the wrong damn posts on the battery and they even asked me which ones I used for my car. The side posts have a dead cell which was causing the issue. I bought a new battery and put my car back together and everything is good. I feel like a donkey.

The side terminals on the battery will seperate from the internals of the battery itself, usually on the positive side. I've seen several just fall loose from the battery while connected to the cable. Overtightening the cables is usually the cause, or sometimes just age.

    • Doing the right thing, replacing both valves is the way to go. The valves with the ball leak far more often than the schrader. Never cared for them. The accumulator really should be replaced if the system has had no pressure in it and it was a keeper, but since you're looking to sell it, bet you can get by. Did you pull the orifice screen and see what was there?   Shame you can't get 134a. Hopefully the previous repairs included dye.   Some of the R4s I messed with developed leaks where the line sets connected or the front seal. Had one where the HPCO was leaking. Front seal would only leak under pressure. See any obvious oily spots?   I've got nitrogen I use to test pressure and to help dry the system prior to evacuation.   Keep up the good work
    • Next time you're on a road trip to a state where you can still buy it stock up on 12oz cans, you might look into getting certified so you can buy it where you are as well. When they switched from R12 to R134a the test for certification was easy, they basically just wanted the $25
    • Getting greedy...   The AC pump has been replaced at least once per service records, and it's been recharged twice since 2018 or so, in approximately 2 year intervals between those charges.   It was done at the same shop...clearly they were enjoying the revenue of recharging the system periodically versus actually tracking down and fixing the leak. I learned that the owner was 88 years old when she passed in 2023, so maybe they assumed only a temporary fix was needed anyway.   The system is basically empty now, the compressor spins freely, so I'm guessing it "just needs a recharge".   I vacuumed it down, and it has basically held overnight. Doesn't appear to leak under vacuum, check! So it must leak under pressure. I don't have a way to pressurize the system and pressurizing it with shop air wouldn't be great for the air dryer (which is probably toast anyway?)   The dryer (accumulator? I'm not an AC expert) has a Schrader valve, but the high side has an old ball-type valve, which are notorious for leaking. It's clearly had schmutz blown out of it at one point because the line/area next to the valve is coated old black crud, which I assume is AC refrigerant residue/oil, or maybe even dirty dye. I think I'll roll the dice and replace the valves. I have a black light around here somewhere so I'll find it and shine it around the engine bay in the dark to see if there's any dye.   I can't think of another way to track down the leak other than injecting some dye (if it doesn't have any) and having it charged up. We can't buy R134a off the shelf here anymore, so I'll run it up to Jiffy Lube and have them do it. I think I have a coupon. At the very least, the charge should last long enough for a year or two, according to history. I think this truck will be long gone by then. But cold AC is a selling point.    
    • Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!
    • If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍
