New To The Forum - Saying Hi!

so i am new to this forum. i am selling my 2005 ford f150 and i was a member of a f150 forum for a long time. now it's time to move on. i am picking up my new 2008 Sierra 6.0L Z71 with max towing package Friday afternoon. would have had it last friday when i signed the paperwork, but it was a dealer transfer and the original dealer had installed an alarm on it - while removing it for the transfer, they fried the main computer. GM did not want to let go of a new computer, so they made the dealership try a bunch of other things first, and when nothing worked, they finally sent the new computer today, and the service manager said all is well. i hate the thought of buying a new truck that has already had a problem with it before i even pick it up. these things happen though - i worked for a dealer before, and you would be surprised at what some vehicles go through before you buy them. it might have been different if i had never known about it??

i love forums - they are packed with good people and lots of information. i already bought the rough country leveling kit that was delivered today (don't even have the truck yet). i read through a lot of threads and it seemed like rough country's kit was the overwhelming favorite. i just bought 285/70-17 BFG all terrains for my ford three months ago. i am thinking of taking it down to have the f150 and sierra tires switched. i just don't know how the stock sierra tires will look on my f150 - it has a leveling kit as well, and the tires look really good on that truck - an extra selling point. i guess i will just have to see what i can get away with. i hate to run out and spend another $1000 on tires again.

so i am one of those guys who likes to tinker with everything. i will start with the leveling kit, and either switch the tires - or go with new wheels and tires. if i go with new wheels/tires i am thinking 286/65-18 nitto terra grapplers on black rockstar wheels (truck is black/black). what else are you guys doing with these trucks? i don't want to go higher. i tow a toy hauler a couple of times a month so fuel economy and ride comfort are a must.

what other things are you guys tinkering with? this is my first GM truck and first 4x4.

thanks for reading and let me know what you guys think.

Welcome aboard Jason :D

Most of us like to tinker with just about everything ourselves,I know I do all the modifications and maintenance on my truck myself.

Also,You said you worked at a dealer before,I work at one myself...I'm the parts manager there.

As far as what else we all do to our trucks....Well most of us all have front-end leveling kits,as well as some kind of cold-air intake system, performance exhaust system,a programmer or "custom tune" for the PCM,and a tonneau cover or some kind of bed cover is quite popular also.

Oh....And don't forget,You must post pictures of your new ride :uhoh:

Ditto on what Rich said. On this site, if we can't dazzle you with our brilliance, we'll baffle you with our BS. Welcome to our world.

Welcome and I am sure your Wife has warned you about us spending your money for you.

Why don't you just go ahead and post you credit card #s and your address, and we will get all the Mods out of the way for you.

Rich, you get him the GMPP exhaust and CAI and I will get him a a Max Energy tune on the way unless he wants a "custom tune" of course.

BTW, we will not rag you too bad about your previous life. At least it was not a Turdra or other ricer.

Glad to have ya, Jason! Your knowledge from working at a dealer is an obvious asset to us all. We love to see pics so post 'em when you get the chance! (Pics of the new truck, progress on the leveling kit install, tinkering projects, wife... )

I feel right at home already...

Yes, it's true... my wife warned me about spending money on this truck.

i switched because i recently bought a toy hauler and the F150, despite all the mods, just didn't have enough to get the job done. with the price of diesel being so high and no telling where it will go, i settled on what seemed to be the most powerful gas engine and towing setup i could find. i like the integrated brake controller and towing mirrors. i didn't have the towing mirrors before so i would always sway back and forth into the other lane just to let people know i was getting ready to come over. i hate guys like me. haha.

where can i get a good look at these molded splash guards?

i am off to the dealer to pick up the truck. i am taking my new leveling kit with me in the hopes that for all the trouble and time i had to wait they will put it on for me and give it an alignment. least they can do, right?

i will begin to post pics this weekend. i am thinking of de-badging right away while it is new and they are easier to get off.

    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
    • To me it honestly makes zero difference what filter you run. It's not a race engine, just a truck engine that's mostly bumming highways and it just needs a filter that filters oil.   The filter used to be a 7060 and the long version was a 7045. Now it's the newer updated filter that the K2XX trucks and newer run, the 100255 I believe if we are using napa numbers. Any of those filters is going to do the job.   I wouldn't overthink it, to me it makes no difference because those first filter numbers worked for 18+ years before the spec suddenly changed.
