How Long Can The Truck Sit Before Battery Drains?

The truck (07 Yukon Denali) will be sitting for a couple weeks while I travel for work and go on vacation. How long can it sit in the garage before I have to worry about the battery going dead? Or does GM put some sort of baterry drain protection on their vehicles?

Depending on how many features your truck came with, I've heard anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks...The most I've ever left my truck sit was about 4 days after I had a severe ear infection and couldn't even stand up, let alone drive.

 

You can hook up a "battery minder" which'll supply a very low charge so the battery is not completely depleted.

I think that they do have a battery drain protection, but its probably limited it what it can do. I would just put a trickle charger on it.

We have some that sit on our lot for weeks and start right up,Then others sit on the lot for days and go dead!

They do move the lot around every 2-3 weeks though so pretty much everything gets started at that time.

Now the Corvette's & Cadillac's I personally start-up once a week and let them run for 15-20 minutes,because they will go dead in a couple weeks because of all the computers in them (They have anywhere from 12 to 15)

You know Jeff I'm not sure,But its gotta' be close to that.

I know when I went for on-site training down Atlanta on the "New-For-'05" Corvette C6 they told us to tell the customer that IT WILL go dead in 2-3 weeks if it wasn't started and or driven,Because they had anywhere from 12-15 computers in them depending on the options it had,They told us to sell,or give,the customer a Battery Tender!

I can tell you that they do go dead in 2-3 weeks if not started,I've seen it at the dealership myself.

Also,if you have an '05 C6 with a 6-spd. manual transmission you must put it in reverse when parked,or the modules will not go to "sleep" and it will go dead in hours (I've seen that happen also thanks to dumb salesman who didn't know any better,but should have!!!)

So it's JUST 05s? I know my cousin just bought an late 07-early 08 C6 Z06...While I've never owned a manual truck (at least not one that was daily driven) I was told the best gear to leave it in is 1st.

My 99 will be completely kill the (a new) battery in 5 weeks. I've let the 08 sit for 3 weeks and it started right up. I've started putting my extra cars on Battery Tenders if they are going to sit for more then a week since draining the battery really shortens the life. Buy a real Deltran Battery Tender (Plus) b/c they can't overcharge the battery. I have two of them now, one for the 97 SL and one for the 99. I have the lighter plug option for the 99 which makes hookup really quick. On the SL the lighter plug will not charge the vehicle so I hooked that one directly to the battery.

Yes,Just the '05s,The '06-up C6's are not affected.

We have an '08 Z06 on the showroom floor right now,We leave it in Neutral (With the E-Brake on of course) and its fine,Of course like I said earlier I start the Vette's up every week to week-and-half just to make sure they don't go dead ('Cause then you have to do all that relearn crap!)

well every night i leave me GPS on/plugged in is a "hibernation" mode, my ipod running constantly, and sometimes other peoples ipods/ cells phones.... and i have a little blinking light on my keyless that blinks when its locked with the remote.... and prolly a few other things as well... never had a problem but the longest ive let it sit is about 2 days but started right up...

I would imagine 2 weeks is the latest you could go without any problems at all, 1 month at max. I've gone only about 1 week without cranking my old Silverado.

Thanks. I'll have to talk to the women about taking errand running one day. She hates taking because it feel too big for her and I make her park it in spot away from other vehicles to avoid door dings.

 

Speaking of parking lots (a little off topic; but a random thought), as trucks and big SUVs become less popular, parking spots are probably going to get smaller to fit more vehicles in them. The yukon almost already sits yellow line-to-yellow line in most parking lot by me.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
