Need Help With Leaking Steering Rack.............

2001 GMC Sierra x-cab 4.8L

 

Notice some fresh drips on the ground today... I looked under the truck an noticed the Driver side boot on the Steering rack was covered in power steering fluid. Obviously a slow leak because it was covered in road grime too.

 

 

What does this mean?

 

Do I need a new Rack or can I repair it ????

I know this problem all to well Beav. I had the exact same problem on my 97'. My local autozone had this power steering sealant made by Lucas Oil. I bought a bottle ($10) to see how well it worked and no more leak. Sometimes luck works to our advantage. 10,000 miles and counting and the leak hasnt returned. When posting this I am assuming you dont have an obvious problem with the power steering system like a loose connection or a hole in the fluid tank. Good luck.

My last truck (2000 Silverado) never had this leak. I did not inspect the system too closely but I will. I notice a few weeks ago that the power steering reservoir was near empty. So I filled her up and now I see a small leak.

 

I will try the stop leak (Do I just add it to the power steering fluid or what?

After you take a good look at your sytem and rule out any obvious reasons for the leak (see my previous post) try that stop leak stuff. It comes in a long thin bottle kind of like a gear oil bottle. Just fill up your reservoir and drive like normal.
