Water Pump Whine 94 6.5 2500

checked at local dealers [2] and they have never seen it,

so [my first post] my question is..

94 6.5 2500 series [light 3/4] 2wd....has a very loud 'whine' from the water

pump...

checked it again today when I was changing alternator, and definitely from water

pump itself..

sounds very similar to low or defective power steering pump, but comes from water

pump, even just spinning lightly by habd [with belt off]..

I also spun the vacumn pump, a/c pump, and P/S pump with a belt and a pulley mounted in an electric drill..

the noise started quiet, and the increased over maybe 5,000 miles, has stayed the same for maybe 20,000 miles now, and no noticeable play in the pump itself, or leakage

at all..

I also ran the engine shortly with belt off to make sure it wasn't anyplace else..

 

it's mildly irritating, don't mind changing the pump, but..

what's the noise..???

 

truck has maybe only 510k on it now..

My '91 5.7 had a water pump that sounded like this. It almost sounded like a gear drive. Not sure what caused the sound but mine too operated fine for many thousands of miles until I changed it just out of pure irritation with the noise. The pump making the noise was a replacement itself. Probably just bad quality control. Fortunately it doesn't sound like it's causing you any real problems. Take a couple of hours and change it when you get irritated enough.
