2000 Silverado 2500 Questions Plz Help

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500. I am confused, it looks older than my 99 1500 because of the body style, I assume they used older bodies on the 2500? I know they did on cab chassis etc..

Anyhow, I am looking for a good forum or area to see what I have, tranny, axles, transfer case etc...

What I do know is its a 5.7L vortec, has push button on the dash for 4wd, has pre 98 looks, 8600gvw, and what looks like one hell of an axle and rear brake drum setup.

Can someone help me out here, One of my first questions is lack of power, It feels doggier than any carb 305 I have ever driven, The plugs look fairly recent, no check engine light, runs very smooth and quiet, no soot in the tailpipe, Just has very very little acceleration.

I plan to tune it up, But I have a feeling there is something wrong, Any ideas?

If you just bought his truck and it has very little excelleration, I would bring it to a trusted mechanic asap. Many years ago when I was like 19 or 20 I bought a used cutlass with a 5.0 And it would not accelerate over 40. Winded up getting my money back from the dealer within 1 hour. How many miles does this 2000 2500 have anyways?

It has 139,000 miles. It will get up and go as much as most average low power cars, its just not near what I expect from a 350 motor.

Could be it has a plugged catalytic converter...there is a procedure on testing for this, see if there's a shop that'll do this for you, or just have them diagnose the poor performance.

From my experience of using HD trucks , specifically Ford's. I noticed when I got to the 125,000 mile mark, they aren't as powerful as they were brand new. Alot of things can be going on here with 139,000 miles. The cat, the manifolds could be leaking, plugs, ect. Was the truck used for snow plowing in the past? You can easily tell if you find small drill holes in the plastic under sterring wheel or lower. Snow plowing can take it's toll on a truck from years of plowing if you don't know what you are doing.

All set guys, thanks for the tips, turned out the air filter had about 2/3 cup dirt and soot in it, And the stupid little plunger thing that tells you to replace hadn't read replace.

As soon as I put a new filter in the truck idled higher for a minute or two, drove it around and it goes well now.

And FWIW it has never plowed, but it will.

Thanks again!!
