got a 5.3 in my new avalanche and time for first oil change. What should I use ? Facts and Experiences on synthetics, additives, and weights are welcome. I heard that synthetics on the first few oil changes are not recommended. Also, am distrustful of additives. Input ?

No additives!!!  Ever!!!

Synthetic is OK on the first change if you want, but I'd wait until the second if I was going to switch.  It takes about 4-5K miles to break in these motors.

I would always run the recommended weight of oil that GM says is correct.  That way you stay within your warranty.

If you read the "Oil Life System" thread then it seems as though synthetics aren't a whole lot better than "dino" oil as far as longevity.  I realize they are more "slippery", and help preserve our natural resources, but your "change engine oil" light in the message center seems as though it is pretty darn accurate.

Additives are no good.  They're great for clogging oil pump screens, passages, and creating varnish.

In my opinion, there's no problem with switching to synthetic at the first change.  Mobil 1 5W-30 will do the trick.
