Problems With Fuel Prime Assembly?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone else has had their fuel primer go out on them? I have a 2004 3/4 Ton PU and after about just 4 fuel filter changes, the primer has gone bad. It's out of warranty and the part costs $650.00. Anyone else have their primer go out so soon?

Thanks

Mark

At the risk of sounding clueless, when you say Fuel Primer, you are speaking of the Fuel Pump?

If so, electric pumps can last 15 years and 200,000 miles or then can go out in 3 years and 50,000 miles. There are a few things that contribute to their death. One being constantly running the tank low on fuel and contaminated fuel.

I am not sure where you are located but $650.00 sounds a little rough on an FP assy.

Hi there and welcome to the forums!

What is the fuel primer doing? Leaking? Not firming up after pressing it to prime the system?

It's actually the Fuel Prime Assembly, not pump. It's the part that has a "button" on it that you push to get fuel into the system after you have either run out of gas or have your fuel filter changed.

 What were the symptoms when the Fuel Prime Assembly is bad? My grandson has an 03 silverado that doesn't start after it has been sitting a while. It just spins the engine but if you stop and start it again it will start. He thought it was not getting fuel and has changed the fuel pump but that didn't help. I think that if it is fuel it might be loosing the fuel in the line and has air in the line when he tries to start it.

But I'm no mechanic that's why I'm coming to the experts.

My question would be how did you arrive at the conclusion that the primer is bad? In answer to your question I have replaced a few but they were usually on trucks above the 150,000 mile mark.
