Fuel Filter Confusion

okay, today at my parts place i bought a baldwin fuel filter (bf7827), listed in their books as for my lly duramax. according to baldwin it xreferences gm parts 89016324, 97256734 and 97385488. dealer lists 89017645 for my truck when searching by assembly code. can someone clarify this for me, do i need to get another filter, the baldwin was $25, dealer was $75.

 

also,i checked the price on the filter asembly bleed screw/plug, dealer wants $20, is there a better way to bleed the system, or a cheap aftermarket alternativ? i can see my self caught at 3:00am in the rain and stripping the plastic plug, id rather not use a metal one as it could be possible to strip the assembly, or start galvanic corrosion.

i was hoping for a plastic aftermarket cheap alternative, i can see myself stripping the upper assembly eventually, r having i corrode in. is there any reason you cant bleed the air out through the schrader valve on the feed line to the injectors from the filter assembly(im thinking about the one to the upper left of the alternator of an lly)?

 

in general, what are the symptoms of a truck that require a fuel filter change?

It will not be difficult to know when the fuel filter needs to be changed. The engine will either not start or it will start and then quit.

 

I always have a spare filter, filter wrench, and water sensor wrench in my tote box in the bed of the truck.

Not true. My FIL's LLY was towing his camper in the Tennessee mountains passing a semi with a semi on his butt, when all of a sudden the truck just lost all power. He couldn't pull faster than 35 mph loaded or unloaded. When he got to a dealership the fuel filter was packed solid. It still ran just had a very lean condition if the RPM was too high.

 

I change mine every other oil change. Knock on wood, no problems yet.

+1. Number one symptom of dirty fuel filter is reduced power. The only time the truck wont start is if the filter is clogged. At that point, the filter is way over do to be changed.
