Transmission Diagnosis...whirring Noise

I'm hoping to get some advice, since I've been ripped off by so called transmission "specialists" 2 or 3 times now. I have a 2000 Jimmy 2dr, Automatic transmission that's been making really loud "whirring" noises that increase with RPM...only when transmission is engaged. No problems shifting, not sluggish in any way, and overall the tranny seems to perform well. But put her in drive or reverse, give it gas, and it whines like crazy. I'm thinking a bearing(s) of some sort. Now... I was told that I'd have to replace my entire transmission at a cost of over 3 grand. Does anyone have advice on what this could be, and what the least expensive option would be for me?

See.. now this is EXACTLY why I don't trust transmission "specialists".

Turns out the problem is my torque converter, and despite what they told me... I do NOT need to have the entire tranny rebuilt or replaced. Cost is around 500. A far cry from the $3500 they wanted to charge me for a rebuilt tranny. I feel sorry for those that take a mechanics word at face value.

Well... that's cool.

This may be the first time a post got solved by the original poster before we got there to respond.

Glad you got it figured out... Good luck.
