5.3l Engine Smoking Question

Recommended Posts

If you remember, I tipped my Tahoe on it's driver's side up on the trails. I was able to use reverse with the wheels cranked to tip it back on all 4's. Then I noticed tons of smoke, and I got out to see the tailpipe smoking like a mosquito fogger. The smoke smelled like burning coolant and was white. It only lasted about a minute then cleared up and hasn't done it since, so I'm assuming it's probably ok. It's been a few weeks and the coolant in the jug hasn't gone any lower.

My question is this - how can coolant get into the combustion chamber while on it's side? and be fine after getting back level?

You were burning oil, not coolant. Unless you blow a head gasket coolant will not get into the combustion chamber.

Chances are you werent burning coolant. Coolant should never get into the combustion chamber unless you have a blown headgasket.

Yeah...When you roll it over...Oil goes all sorts of places it's not supposed to go (like the intake and combustion chamber)...And gets burned off.

If I were you, I'd change my oil, check ALL my fluids, and call it good.

I couldn't think of any way coolant could get in there either, but it really smelled like it more than burning oil. An oil change probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
