Timing Reset?..

Recommended Posts

I have the dumb question of the day.I had a check engine light come on.The dealer is changing the knock sensors as we speak.Im under the impression that when the knock sensor light comes on that the timing is retarded to protect the engine. So does this mean that timing has to be reset when the sensors are changed? or will the everything go back to normal on its own when the sensors are changed an the light goes out? Thanks.

When the knock sensor(s) go out, the computer goes to a default setting to avoid engine damage. This results in poor fuel mileage too until the sensors are replaced. If a dealer is replacing the knock sensors, then they will likely also clear the code that came up. If you replaced them yourself, then the computer will receive new feedback and return to normal function. The code may stay up but, can be cleared by removing the battery connection, a mechanic's scanner, or for free at AutoZone they'll clear it too.

The fix for this has been for the dealer to replace the sensors, and then use RTV sealant around the boot that seals to the top of the motor. A reminder as well: In the future, if you want to wash your motor off, don't spray directly under the intake manifold where the knock sensors are. They apparently don't seal well and collect water and cause corrosion of the contacts on the knock sensors which causes the malfunction.
