8.1 Tune?

I have an 01 gmc ecsb 4x4 8.1 allison 4:10s with a throttle body spacer and a diablo sport predator performance 87 tune. Didn't notice much difference when I added either one nor did I on my 01 chevy 6.0 hd. It runs ok but id like a little more power. Is the diablo junk or not? Throttle body spacer? Ive heard some good things about westers garage but I was wondering what everyone thinks? Thanks

Ryan,

I used to buy into alot of "get 10Hp" here and there parts and they never seemed to hold up to the manufacturers claims. I stopped and decided to just buy tried and true parts that will make obvious power. No TB spacers, No pills in the gas tank, No stickers telling other people how fast you are etc.... :idiot:

I've got an 01 CCSB 2wd with 4.10's, JBA headers, KN filter.. very similar setup to yours. I bought a Hypertech power programmer and was just as disappointed with it as I was with the one I bought for my long gone 1995 Z28.. junk..

NOW, I decided to get a tuner PCM. I needed the speedo corrected for my 285 tires anyway, and decided to go with wait4me performance primarily due to price (I mean, i wasn't going to lose alot more money if these tunes were junk like Hypertech). Well, I don't say this often, but wow... what a difference. You'll notice instantly, the difference with tq management reduced and the ecm optimized. I was actually pleasantly suprised and for the price of their tunes you can't go wrong. Has lifetime updates as well.

I bought a spare PCM from him with the tune on it, just in case I needed to go back to stock for some reason, I wouldn't be without a driveable truck. The hardest part of the swap is getting the cmptr out of its happy home and back in the engine compartment. The rest is easy and non regrettable. I think it was 160.00 including a new pcm/tune and shipping. Can't beat it.

Thanks for the info, i appreciate it. So should I get rid of the throttle body spacer or just leave it in there? Also you said you bought a tune and a pcm for $160? That diablo sport predator is going on ebay, I noticed no difference at all with it in my 8.1 and my previous 6.0.

Thanks again

I also had a Predator with my 6.0...fortunately, it had a 30 day return which I took advantage of....zero difference in performance or mpg

I just got a tune from Blackbear performance and it is far superior....with the 87 octane and a few tranny adjustments, I have a real noticeable power increase and mpg is up over a mile per gallon...

I also kept the original pcm ....cheaper than any of the programmers....

Vmax2007,

I'm not saying wait4me performance is the best out there.. Just that their price (including shipping and a new pcm) was terrific for the performance upgrade, which was actually very noticeable, vs all of the hand helds that in my experience which are junk for gassers.

I'm sure that someone out there works magic with EFI live and could spank this tune.. My opinion is, you get what you pay for and in this case, I think I got a bargain.

BTW, they offer free changes for life as well.

Most of them do. I know Nelson, Blackbear, Wheatley and Westers do.

I have no doubt that WFM is better than most (if not all) handhelds. But to be honest, that aint saying much.

You can't lose with any custom tuner and there are plenty to choose from: wait4me, blackbear, nelson, wheatley, westers and EFIlive. Pick the one you like the most and you won't be disappointed.

i bought a bully dog tuner for my 8.1 a while back and i felt 0 difference, so i took the 8.1 out tonight to a local dyno shop and had a small tune done, as this is my daily driver and i tow regulary with it i didnt want to hurt that. according to the sheets i gained about 24 hp and 31 lbft of torque at the wheels. i dont think thats to bad, i havent had a chance to really open her up yet to see if it feels any different though.

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
