Clunking When Brakes Applied Or Released From Stop

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with my 2008 chevy silverado 2WD. When I brake lightly, and near a stop, this truck clunks like something is sliding in the bed of the truck. Sometimes it does this from a stop when I let off the brake as well. The dealer tells me that the slip yoke might need lubricated. But doesnt oil get inside there since its in the trans? And if thats not the problem, has anyone seen a different diagnosis with the same complaint?

Please Advise? Paul

The shaft splines are probably the problem. It was an issue on previous years. The only other thing I can think of is the leaf springs slapping against each other. Verify that a pad did not fall off or wear out.

I had the same problem with my 2000. Fixed it by changing the slip yoke with a new nickel plated one. There is a service bulletin on this site explaining it.

mine does the same thing but not all the time. I figured that I finally got one with "the clunk". it's weird cause it feels like a car bumps me from behind.

I changed my transfer case oil and got rid of the clunk in my truck. the oil that came out was very black. redline has an oil that can be used in the transfer case.
